Overrated: the Declaration of Independence: the British Empire peacefully banned slavery 30 years before the US killed a million Americans to do it, and the Brits didn't even need any highfalutin rhetoric about self-evident truths to do it.
Underrated: The Industrial Revolution and its reception in the United States.

history education in the US is generally extremely bad and the kids remember almost nothing, so in some sense, it's all underrated. but objectively 'overrated' content would be regime narratives which calcified into 'history' for political purposes. something like 'the underground railroad' didn't really exist as advertised. it's a function of regime narratives from the WWII era designed to suppress racial unrest in the US.
one category which is absent from a lot of US history teaching is the indian wars. not 'custer's last stand,' which has also become a regime narrative over time. but the actual battles and campaigns which defined the borders over time. even battles the US lost, like st. clair's defeat.
i suspect this is because it 'frames' US-native relations in the 'wrong' sort of schema, as one of mutual combat, rather than one of unilateral victimization.
demographic shifts in american cities in the 1960's are hugely important to the modern nation (whites fleeing crime and supercharging the suburbs, etc.), but stuff like that is way too politically-charged for the system to touch.

It is totally insane. Are you familiar with The Alternative Hypothesis on YouTube? Guy's real name is Ryan Faulk, prolific data-driven right wing guy who stopped making content.
But he had a video a while back showing that the stuff you tell kids at this age basically fully brainwashes most of them for life. He gave some example where kids were told about the Northwest Tree Octopus. An Octopus that lives in trees in the northwest part of the country. All of the kids just fully believed it. Obviously it's BS, but they just took it in completely.
So now you just think about how kids are told about slaves being constantly beaten and whipped, how they're escaping via an "underground railroad," and they're constantly being raped. And then these kids grow up and see movies like "Lincoln" (fucking unbelievably bad garbage) and endless movies and TV shows about racism and they just believe it and then increasingly lose their minds when nothing changes in the condition of black people despite no real visible racism. Big problems!!

Because it was a truly pointless war.
It's significance is that it destroyed:
- Austrio-Hungary Empire;
- Ottoman Empire;
- Created the Forever Jewish War in Palenstine;
- Set the stage for Germany to kick-off WW2

my HS spent way too much time on medieval/renaissance era euro shit for world history and too much on colonial/revolution/civil war era rote memorization stuff for American. 20th century US history wasn't even a required class and our math dept required you to take multiple math classes if you wanted to take AP level stuff, so you had to pick a lane.
college/grad programs should have history 100% be a larger component in a perfect world, though it would likely just wind up being lib garbage.

You had to fight for course placement back then. They wanted to fuck my math trajectory over because I got a C in 8th grade math (my teacher was a CUNT), and I was like nah so I took calculus at a community college in 11th grade so I could get into AP calc in 12th grade. Got a 5 on that exam as well as AP physics and coasted my first year or two in college. Now, I have more math education than many who have PhDs in the subject (if you count statistics as math, which I do)
Even worse was my AP music theory teacher & band teacher--an absolute nightmare of a woman who wouldn't let me take AP music theory "2" (for some reason, she wanted AP music theory to have a second part for a full year). I was furious, my guidance counselor even called her a bitch, etc. I wound up getting a 5 on the AP exam anyway.
The "pick a lane and stay in it" approach didn't work for me when I was in my teens and it sure as fuck doesn't work for me now.

everything except post-fdr america is basically treated as fairy tale. but at least some of the political minutia of 19th century america is actually covered even if only under the pall of howard zinn's resentments, if not simply without any serious attempt to make sense of it.
everything before rome and between rome and the "enlightenment" is basically treated as lotr with fake characters and storylines. in a normie educational setting dominated by women the specter of serious civilizational turmoil and decline, or alien peoples existing under radically different ideas and moral systems, really cannot be dealt with seriously as a tangible matter experienced by real people.

My high school history class was taught by a colonel in the Army National Guard. He would wheel in the TV from the resource room and we'd watch The History Channel at least three times per week for the entire class period. That was back when The History Channel only played Hitler documentaries.
Come to think of it, we really didn't learn anything in history class besides the plight of the 6 million.

the train was an understudied aspect of american history.
it marked the creation of all these new cities and towns. it left racial issues completely unresolved (do black sit in the back of the train or the back of each car? can they use this water fountain or is that a white fountain? it hasnt been marked yet).
we spent way too much time on the underground railroad and none on the actual railroad

Well, I received essentially no education in PostWar America. The late 40s through the 70s - all sorts of the most important shit happened here, such as Atom Bomb, Cold War, Bretton Woods, PetroDollar, Creation of National Security State, Founding of US Empire. But we barely talked about it.
We talked a lot about the Iriqois confederacy though.

Too much faggy UK & France stuff in covered in world history
Not nearly enough religious background given in public schools. EVERYTHING that has happened in the west since 1517 is fairly nonsensical without an understanding of Catholicism, the Reformation, and various Protestant divisions.
Thirty Years War not brought up much
As for US stuff, the Korean War gets glossed over
I remember being behind in the syllabus and not being taught shit about anything after ~1969
Dissolution of the Soviet Union & formation of the EU both under-discussed. HS teachers have this way of thinking 'oh that's practically a current event, I don't need to cover it in class, they should know this'. The Soviet Union collapsed when I was 8, I didn't really know shit about it until later in life.
