A simple verbal apology would have precluded the entire war. Austria badly wanted to avoid the whole thing and basically begged on hands and knees for them to give them the PR win and avoid the war. Even the Russian Czar was like "just apologize" but Nicholas was a cuck and wanted a war so he could neuter the new Duma so he didnt particularly bend any Serb elbows. For want of a worthless apology tens of millions died.

The British almost double crossed the Russians at the last minute. There were a series of telegraphs asking the Germans what would it look like if England declared against Russia.
