Interestingly enough, we were interviewing for a paid summer internship & among the candidates was zoomer who had his mother join the interview, and she started speaking on his behalf—I kid you not.
If you can get through Calc 1 with a C or business calculus with a B minus, then you are ‘smart enough’ to make 6-figures 2-3 years after college. “Calculation” is not the limiting factor in the labor market—communication, relationship building & solving people’s problems is what gets you paid.
Women typically have an edge on men early career, because their EQ & communication are more calibrated to corporate environments, & they are much better at acquiring a coalition of mentors that facilitate their advancement.
Men usually don’t catch their stride until 28-32—that’s when the expertise really compounds, but you also have to be in the “mix.” Never be the first guy home from the Happy Hour, and if a veteran wants to stay out and drink, you better be there until he’s done, and that might be 4 or 6am—it helps to have a larger, athletic build 185 min but ideally 200, never less than 16% bf but keep a flat stomach. Be aware of how you process alcohol; if you’re an angry or sloppy drunk, pace is important—opt for the lighter beers 4% alc, never order a double. If he’s a cocktail drinker, follow his lead, mimicking their order is fail safe: familiarize yourself with Negronis, Old Fashion, Martini, Espresso Martini. Familiarize yourself with the best cocktail bars in the area; you will have to entertain for business reasons to people coming in from out of town. (Never speak poorly about a bar or restaurant unprompted—they might like that spot.)
Do not order a margarita; but if you must, do mezcal in lieu of tequila. Never order Liqour + soda, mixed drinks with redbull or colas. Shots are okay if celebratory & others are partaking, never to get drunk—stick to tequila here, never well, but don’t suggest the top shelf unless your senior is suggesting (the most senior person puts down the corporate card); don julio and casamigos are safe options. Older men will opt for scotches and bourbons—familiarize yourself, and become conversational; read reviews and watch YouTube videos, so you can discuss them as if you’ve tried them even if you haven’t.
Major metros only. Regional or satellite offices outside of NYC, Chicago, LA are dead ends—do not consider Phoenix/Scottsdale, Dallas/Plano, Atlanta, Philadelphia unless you failed out of the elite market or ready to “cruise” and stop growing—ideally only make those moves as regional lead/vp.
NYC can be tough for outsiders without legacy & grit—it’s not impossible, but your competition is hungrier than you are; don’t let negative feedback or shit-talking “rattle” you—if your boss calls you a fucking idiot, he might not mean it as long as the direct deposit keeps hitting. Chicago is great for modal, non-eccentric personalities, upwardly mobile first/second generation Americans; be honest & deliver on your promises; midwesterners are polite, so often will not give you constructive feedback. Los Angeles is transplant friendly; very few people will judge your pedigree, as long as you have a “good vibe” and are good at what you do; you will need to smile more and always frame things positively (the sunshine helps with this); if you’re coming from NE, don’t be as crude and brash—here fighting words are fighting words; if you’re midwestern, do not confuse cordiality with friendship & learn to down-regulate your trust.
If you’re having difficulty breaking into T1 cities, then satellite offices as close as possible to the target city—2-4 years max. Make sure to attend industry events in the target city, especially the “fun” ones. Every industry is smaller than you expect; talent pools are small; and if you’re trained, autonomous, not socially retarded, and well groomed, you will be solicited by a competitor
