Cop`s Beliefs Violated In `Rape Of Richard Beck`

In ``The Rape of Richard Beck,`` at 8 p.m. Monday on ABC-Ch. 7, a tough Seattle homicide cop (played by Richard Crenna) is trapped by two cop-hating goons in a basement, where he is beaten, raped and forced into a painful reexamination of his attitudes towards violence, women and his own masculinity. It is a curious venture with good intentions.

``This kind of film has never been done before,`` says Crenna, though the ``ABC Theater`` team that put together this drama has considerable experience with troubling themes for television. Director Karen Arthur`s credits include ``Victim for Victims: The Theresa Saldana Story,`` about an actress stabbed repeatedly by a crazed fan. Writer James G. Hirsch`s ``Intimate Agony`` dealt with herpes. Producer Robert Papazian did nuclear war and the collapse of the civilized world in ``The Day After.``

Crenna`s Richard Beck starts out as a kind of Popeye Doyle cop who makes up his own rules when he goes ``on safari`` into the urban jungles of downtown Seattle. He pokes into dark corners. He slams suspects around. He trades for street information, at one point letting off a rapist who provides an address for a murderer. ``I don`t know what kind of rock you`ve been hiding under, Beck,`` shouts a rape crisis intervention officer, ``but a lot of us have been working to change things.``

Beck merely lifts an eyebrow and shrugs until, in an experience mindful of the racial movie ``Black Like Me,`` it happens to him.

At first, he is incoherent. In days that follow, he is ashamed, reclusive, depressed, isolated and the victim of wild office rumors. No one accuses Beck of wearing suggestive clothing, but several male officers snicker that he was ``off-duty`` at the time, and a detective wonders ``was he asking for it, going into dangerous basements like that?``
