I suppose its useful? Except it gets blamed for "racism" and attacked as a colonialist-victorian white supremacist system, but yet those same people who attack it want to continually reinforce it and use it to give certain groups social welfare and demonize other groups. I don't understand how being honest about the underlying diversity would start a "race war" vs what we already have. Like I just pointed out, the system we have generates all kinds of controversy, both from people who agree with it and disagree with it. To me it is better to be honest about the underlying phenomena and map them in ways that actually correspond to nature. This is already done quietly in areas like medicine where you can't afford to tell fairy tales. The people worried it is impractical and will be misused and start a race war are usually just clinging to an emotionally satisfying narrative and have no idea what would actually result from being honest about the subject. I'm not saying we should talk about different "species" per se. The concept of species is already broken for domesticated animals where you see wildly divergent phenotypes across smaller genetic differences (and humans are domesticated). I'm just saying that maybe humans should study themselves in a way thats honest instead of reverting to outdated categories and then blaming it on being scared of racism? But non-essential does not mean not real. They are coarse grained high level compressed categories that reasonably informative. My issue with the categories is more that it allows libs to pretend like they aren't real at all, while at the same time smuggling them back in to say that whites are evil and privileged and other "races" deserve all kinds of special treatment. It is definitely a spectrum. Case in point, scientists will take two skulls--one 2 million years old from Africa and another that is 150K years old from Asia with massive morphological differences and call them both Erectus. I think the main premise from the book suffers a bit from overdetermination though. A lot of the differences between niggers and other ape species could easily be attributed to other hominids and ghost lineages we don't even have a fossil record for yet. One part I'll say was quite strong was the part about Europeans evolving under colder climates and harsher winters and that contributing toward changes in their planning and problem solving skills. Although I think he might be underestimating the effects Neandrathal DNA had on this. Neandrathals lived in Europe for a very long time before other apes and had all kinds of cognitive, personality and structural brain differences to deal with this, and it is well known that the most profound effects Neandrathal DNA had during cross-breeding was on brain architecture and fat storage. What's funny is that I initially read your OP and thought "lol wtf" and now I sort of see what you are getting at. The way race is used by libs is completely and totally evil and seems to obviously cause a lot of cognitive dissonance for them (which comes out in some whacky and unhelpful ways.)
But it also feels like the cat is out of the bag and our best hope for more normal "race" relations is for Boomers to exit the stage. Since boomers seem to be the truest of the true believers when it comes to the blank slate stuff. |
