I was reading the other thread about all the Hispanics in baseball now and the academies down there, which Idk if thats something new or what. But that would not seem to explain the lower volume of blacks, unless baseball has become less popular among them.

In a thread a while ago someone made the point that baseball is a sport where for whatever reason the players have strong father figures, unlike the NBA, so maybe that has something to do with it.

blacks are getting pushed more into basketball and football these days. when the stars of the 90s were growing up, baseball was culturally dominant and everyone played it. nba was a fringe sport until the 80s, so athletic young blacks werent necessarily going to go all in to focus on basketball. these days, its basketball first.

baseball, hockey, and QBs require a lot of experience and skill on top of athleticism. dindus have only recently started fielding QBs becaude of this. hockey they're not getting experience in for obvious reasons. baseball is more cultural -- ive never seen a bunch of dindus playing baseball in the hood. it seems unappealing to them because in requires patience and coordination. in basketball you get innumerable opportunities to get a chance to score. in baseball you don't, have to wait a long time, and have 18 dindus coordinate a game (re: impossible). whereas in basketnall you can just pick up and go.

It was crazy to play against some of the schools that were really competitive in basketball. Their baseball teams were like the D5 mighty ducks. Ragtag as fuck, and the school clearly played favorites with budgeting. They didnt even have matching uniforms.

One of my alltime favorite memories was hitting a home run so massive against a hood school that the shortstop gave me a low five when I rounded 2nd base.

The Latinos were different. I played a summer ball game vs a private hood catholic school and they all looked like Jose canseco. They shut us down and I had our only 2 hits.

Baseball is far more sensitive to the environment than basketball or football. You can’t play it in the snow or anything more than a light drizzle, so equatorial locations with long summers tend to have an advantage. Additionally baseball fields are larger than just about any other sport field and generate more hazards so urban areas have a hard time generating talent.

Baseball used to get NBA/NFL level athletes. Dave Winfield could have played any sport and chose baseball. Tony Gwynn also was a serious basketball player and in his less fat 80s incarnation was hitting triples and stealing bases constantly. Deion and Bo famously did both and would have been excellent if 100% baseball and healthy for longer.

Equivalent athletes today are almost certain to pick NBA or NFL. Both are culturally black leagues. NBA has the best money now. NFL a little lower but with more roster spots and the opportunity to start playing at the top level straight out of college which only a handful get in other sports.

Sure, but my point is that MLB of that era had enough appeal to blacks that they did it alongside football in spite of huge lobbying from NFL to specialize.
