If they were using the full nitrox 36 (which is 36% O2), then they max out at 95 ft. If using the "regular" nitrox 32 (32% O2), they'd max out at 112 ft. Either way, they weren't on a rebreather system, so they should've just stayed with standard air or never gone to 160 ft in the first place. The implication is that whatever they were using likely wasn't fit for the 160+ depth. Such depths are very dangerous regardless and compound whatever problems might occur
What I'm saying: If you're going to such a depth (particularly in a cave of all things), you are basically fucked if your gas mix is off. The fact that all five died tends to indicate to me that there was a gas issue rather than someone getting crazy from nitrogen narcosis and killing themselves or one or two attempted rescuers
I admit that it's also entirely possible there was no gas issue and the person who wigged out or had problems succumbed in a narrow passage that the others couldn't maneuver the body through to clear. Or that the lead took the wrong branch and went deeper than intended or...[insert various things here] |

The article mentions nitrox and I provided info on the upper and lower ranges of nitrox. It doesn't even matter what their specific gas blend was: we know it wasn't standard air and we know that it wasn't trimix. We don't know whether they used a rebreather, but I highly suspect they didn't because you can literally dial in the target partial pressure on your rebreather and it doesn't matter what gas blend you ultimately use. Most technical divers use trimix and have a pony bottle of pure O2 for emergencies. Their dive computer controls the mixture via the rebreather.
