confluence of getting older and living in a time of extraordinary mental illness.
as a child in the 90s, I dont suppose I had knowledge of crazy adults. They were simply... adults. They seemed competent and stable, and seemed to know what they were doing.
As an adult now myself, everyone is fucking insane.
A few months ago my dog-walker, who was kind of a friend, went bonkers. As I was dealing with his text messages about "i have to get out of here, there's a van on my street" etc.. I realized there were *dozens* of such people in my life.
Most of them focus their insanity in politics or culture war issues, but crazy nonetheless.
when people predict apocalyptic stuff, civil war fantasies, or doomerism, or whatever.. I never completely laugh it off, because it really will only take one event to "set off crazies", and we will quickly realize crazies are like 70% of us.
and of course, any random day that china wakes up huffy and decides to fuck with our supply of psych meds, we are 78 hours from total chaos
