was just reading a chapter about the very early cold war. dulles learned about some quaker lib who had a job offer to join faculty in prague.
guy was not connected to intelligence at all, was just some dude.
dulles planted seeds with the soviets that this guy was a major spy.
guy shows up in prague, immediately detained, tortured, held for YEARS. The dude's brother, wife, and daughter all went to eastern europe to find him. they all got nabbed, tortured, sent to siberia, etc.
it was all just a game to dulles, who wanted stalin worried and overreacting to fake news.
the guy actually knew dulles as a kind of acquaintance and just got his whole family's life wrecked. |

Con: He was clearly psychopathic, an actual serial killer. Directly causing torture and murder didn't seem to provoke the slightest qualms. He would have people killed for no good reason at all. He probably did more than any American to create our current state of government (more than FDR even), in which democracy is total fraud and there is a shadow government of oligarchs running the globe. Concepts like "the will of the people" did not even merit consideration to him.
Pro: He may have been an early understander that democracy was shit and the world really runs on an aristocratic elite making decisions. Nearly alone in the FDR administration, he realized that the real enemy was the Soviets and the US needed to retain strong Nazis running Germany and Europe. He did everything he could to protect former Nazis who were competent and in the "club". He was pragmatic at a time when shitlib progressives were fully committed to some idealistic morality where you just kill all the "bad guys" and replace them with anyone else who can surely do the job.
He really was the embodiment of XO BIGLAW partner, of which he is probably the most consequential in history |
