She’s a widow and her very young granchildren live just a few streets over and we’re just starting Kindergarten at the time. Now, they’re a bit older and don’t want to hang out with grandma. Part of the plan was to also fix-up the house she bought and sell for a tidy profit. At first it seemed great. The house next door was being fixed up for a quick flip. Contractors were coming and going. She thought this will be great. All the houses on the street are being fixed up to be turned. Then we moved in. Height of the market. Also, we have a bunch of loud children and clearly have no intention of “fixing up our house to relist anytime soon.” Crestfallen by her failed effort at post-retirement entrepreneurialism in the U.S. housing market (which has no losers and is as safe a place as you can go with your money), she is quadruple whammied by health scares, a falling out with her now middle school aged grandchildren, and a nasally lawyer next door neighbor who’s bothering her about boundary lines and what’s down on file in the property tax office. She probably thinks she got a rough hand. Fortunately for me, I think she’s planning on moving out next year. |
