midnight

I have not talked to them about working remotely or what the firm's view toward that is. I assume it is like most places where it is partner specific (ie some don't give a shit if you want to work from home at night or on weekends, some are big on you being there all the time).

The biggest issue is that the work is not consistent. You are up until 2am or later multiple nights in a row and working 80+ hour weeks for a month or two and then back to a more sane schedule. The only sense I get from them is that at WLRK there are more insane times and less sane times than at other places and the standard for the sane (and insane) times as far as the amount of work you are expected to get done is higher, however slight or great that difference may be.

Author: i wish i wasnt born

7:00 - wake up, jack off, shower, jack off again

7:50 - Buy bagel and coffee from cafe; dream of fucking the somewhat cute cashier girl who must wonder why I look so sad and depressed every morning

8:00 - Go into office, try not to look at old, fat, ugly, bitchy associate whose office I have to pass. God she is dumb too. Wonder what I have done in my life to deserve to work with such a stupid bitch.

8:01 - Log onto system. Check nytimes.com and stock market. Check two dozen useless e-mails, most of them from dumb ass junior female associates on the other coast who are stupid enough to send out email questions to the entire fucking firm rather than research it themselves. Wonder why it is that female associates send 90% of the dumbass e-mail questions.

8:20 - Start dreaming about fucking a hot bitch; will continue for most of morning. Wish I could close my office door and jack off.

8:30 - Start working on actual billable stuff even though I've been billing the client for my dreaming and surfing. Close door to keep out sounds of annoying fat ass secretaries. Wonder why anyone would want to waste their life being a legal secretary.

Until noon - Continue working on whatever, hoping not to be called by any other attorneys asking for help. If busy actually try to finish shit. If not busy try to waste time so I can bill more on the project and fuck over the client.

Noon - go out of office, walk down street hoping to see some hot bitches since all I see are ugly fat bitches in the office. Buy a sandwich, come back to office and eat it alone checking nytimes and billing client for the time

Afternoon - fat ass stupid bitch secretary comes into office for third time. Asks stupid ass question; wastes my time; I pretend to be nice even though I wish she were dead. Wonder why secretary can't write a cover letter without having to ask me a question. Wonder why I can't have a 22 year old hot secretary instead of a 60 year old haggy fat bitch.

4:00 - asshole senior partner calls me with "emergency" assigment that must be completed by tomorrow morning. I know fucking ass partner will come into my office tomorrow morning so I actually feel like I have to work on it. Wonder why this partner always calls me after 4 and always needs an answer within 18 hours. Dream of shooting him.

8:00 - somewhat finish assignment. E-mail partner with answer and hope he won't ask follow up questions even though I know he will. Input my hours into the firm's billing system. Try to double bill as much as I can. Try to "estimate" my time, being fair to myself of course.

8:15 - leave office, take taxi home that firm pays for. Buy some Indian or Thai food. Get home, surf net for porn. Jack off two or three times. Take hot bath. Jack off. Go to sleep dreaming of fucking hot bitch.

Repeat next day.

One thing to consider is that Susman folks travel a lot more, and for longer periods of time if they are doing a trial outside of Houston.

So do I. re: 3k

Traveling for trial is great. You can bill like a mofo when all you have to do to go to work is stagger out of your hotel room and down the hall or on the elevator to the war room or across the street to the Courthouse or local counsel's office.

Long overdue response ... maybe you're around

Yes, he has a SO. She is not an attorney but works super hard so I think they just are okay with spending time apart. He is also very, very efficient and, while he works hard, doesn't waste time and gets home at reasonable hours when not in trial.

Yes, he takes quite a few vacations. Not 3 weeks at a time, but long weekends here and there. The firm seems fine with the work hard play hard life.

Hmmm. Well, I don't sit in his office with him, but I think it is mostly a combination of (1) getting up early, like 5:30 or 6 am; (2) getting to the office early, like 6:30 or 7 am; (3) getting to work right away and only doing work (no fantasy football, personal email, calls to friends); (4) a quick lunch (20 minutes); and (5) then more of (3). Even with all of that, I think the really high annual numbers (3,000 hours) only come from travel and trials.

I'm the opposite. I get in late and check the internet so much I often think about asking the IT guys to disable my browser. Makes it super hard to bill more than 2100 hours.

i think 2800-2900 is more likely the average, but you have to factor in that there are soon-to-be burnouts pulling it down.

It's pretty irrelevant whether Susman is prestigious - the point is that these are the two firms where you'll bill almost 3000 hrs.

there was an hours survey done by greedy associates or some similar website w/ pretty good response rate. wachtell associates reported ~70 hrs week. cravath/s&c were like ~60-65. the other vault firms were like upper 50s.

I remember David Lat making a comment about his Wachtell days that a few folks who turned down Wachtell for hours purposes really regretted it once they realized what it took to make partner at a firm like Cravath or S&C. Not a lot of difference in hours, but a good chunk of change less in compensation.

probably 5 or 6. also, lol at this idea that making partner at wachtell is "so much easier" than at a firm with more leverage. you have to actually stick around for 7-8 years of hell to make it. and hours get worse the more senior you become, not better.

keep in mind that, at least at wlrk and csm, there are fewer midlevels compared to other places (because they're more reluctant to bring in laterals). so you've got sort of a skewed sample of ultra-strivers who stuck around after most of their classmates left

Exactly. Susman guys will sometimes end up with "retirement cases" (contingency wins where they could retire) and still keep working. Of course, that is true for a lot of big law firm partners--it isn't always about the money.

And 60 hours a week goes by a lot faster in trial or arguing motions or even writing briefs.
