Friend was offered 45k scholarship (15k per year) to defer law school for this year. Apparently yield rates are too high.

Should he do it?

BFD. Back when I was applying (2005-2006) Northwestern was doing this for many straight throughers to inflate their median age. I was offered 120koro defer a year as were many others.

So I'm an moron. This is a pretty decent deal. Post edited:

Tuition is rising at a rate of like 9% a year.

And schools treat incoming students differently from current students. If you are already a student, the increase is maybe half that (from 1L-2L). And it's even less going from your 2L to 3L.

Scenario 1 - goes to school right away:

45,000 2010-11

47,250 2011-12

49,500 2012-13

141,750

Scenario 2 - waits a year:

49,000 - 15,000 2011-12

49,500 - 15,000 2012-13

52,000 - 15,000 2013-2014

105,500

Not a bad deal. But still might more than make up for this by practicing law for an extra year.

the difference for instate is only about 5k per year, but if he can find any job that pays more than COL, he could easily save to lower his overall debt even more.

Can I just say that the fact that this kid is even on the fence about this offer suggests to me that he is fucking retarded and UVa should rescind his admission outright.

He's already two years out of undergrad. Doesn't want to wait too long.

Honestly, even aside from the $45k (which is a lot of money), the pushing things out a year further is a good thing legal market wise.

Not to mention that admission rates are going way down this year so the class competition will be intense.

The fact that he was prepared to pay sticker at UVA was the first warning sign.

it's not about attracting good students, it's about yield rate

Admissions office didn't properly factor in ITE and the tough cycle this year and now they're left with too many students choosing to enroll.

Not in Texas where they hate Ivy League graduates and love the fact that UVA is a public school. Also UVA tends to do argulably better in the south and D.C. A full ride at UVA depending on your circumstances / aspirations could own Harvard.

According to some doods on TLS, this is now 54k...if they really couldn't find people to take the 45k, that's just frightening.

all this does is screw the 2011 cycle. there's going to be even less seats available and probably just as many applicants. sucks for them.

How do you go about getting this offer if you haven't been recruited for it? I have a pretty sweet job lined up in McLean. With 54k, instate, and savings, I bet I could knock 100k off of the cost of school in a single year.

I had this offer way back when I was applying in the early 2000's. Northwestern offered me 35k + living stipend to put off law school for a year to get work experience.

I called them and asked what would count, they said anything. I asked whether playing poker would count, they said they would like to see something more "professional."
