Have you ever, for example, read what undergrads try to say about Wittgenstein?
There is no reason, in the world, for an undergrad to ever pick up a Wittgenstein book, much less write a paper about it. None. I actually have to turn away. I am sickened when I read it.
The humanities, the "x"-studies, and much of the social sciences are merely pedagogical abuse. There isn't much else to say about it. It leaves undergrads not only innumerate, but illiterate as well. They are actually worse readers, writers, and thinkers than when they arrived. I don't see how we permit it to continue.
The humanities, as it is nowadays done, also gives these poor saps complexes. They wind up using words like "self," "other," "culture," "complex," and "structure" in these almost perfectly meaningless ways. These words and their usage scratch at meaning enough to persist in academe, but are nebulous enough that these fools will never overcome their worries over these words. These ridiculous, jargon-y words that have almost no purchase with the long and difficult dialectical struggle toward refinement and meaning.
The humanities haven't upturned the hoary old truths. To suggest otherwise is imagination and hubris. But they have done a damn good job ruining otherwise productive young minds with sophistry.
Fuck man. Gut it all. Tear it all down and rebuild it.

Well, analytic philosophy has blessedly gotten away from how incestuous it was for the better part of the 20th century; it is far more interdisciplinary now. So that's a good thing.
But the problem with analytic philosophy, if I am going to reduce it to a thumbnail, is also arguably its virtue: viz., the laser-like focus on philosophical minutiae. Gone are the system-builders, replaced instead by philosophers who, in the manner of Kuhnian ordinary science, push on the various anomalies of these quite bounded theories until revolution is required. (Are you familiar with Kuhn? I can say more if not.)
Now, it isn't as though the "normal science"-ish process is the problem. The problem is that, e.g., properly considered, one's metaethics should depend, at least in large part, on what one's epistemology is, which, in turn, depends on one's metaphysics. But there are few folks out there who are really approaching these questions synoptically.
As a result, analytic philosophy consists, to crib one of the funny words from the parlance of bullshit, a bricolage of pieces. What is needed is systematic thought, but specialization makes that difficult.
This is just one problem; there are others.

TBF, Wittgenstein is the worthless PBR drinking hipster version of Gilbert Ryle. Ryle says the same thing without the fucking fortune cookie statements. Also, his influence is vastly overrated seeing as how most of the really significant philo mind stuff he "came up with" was cribbed from Buddhism, Schopenhauer and the Gestalt guys. Honestly, Wittgenstein sucks.
AP's big problem is logic-chopping.
AP and CP are mostly just different in terminology and in the fact Cp like lit and AP likes science. Kuhn and Foucault basically say the same fucking thing. Unsurprising since Koyre (kuhn's diss advisor) studied under Bachelard.

Ever read Graham Priest? Helpful hint - don't. He's the worst offender IMO. His "logic" suspends noncontradiction. Basically, Hegel via AP.
There's a shitload of these kind of guys, actually.
It's like medieval "backwards logics". They're just so divorced from reality or any starting point as to be useless.

It is undeniable that late W is beyond the level of an undergrad. Late W requires a level of familiarity with, e.g., early W, logical positivism and its response to German idealism, etc., that is just difficult to get as a typical undergrad.
There are exceptions, of course. I am talking here about the median humanities student, or, perhaps even a good humanities student. I am not talking about the very talented. Different rules apply to them.
But seriously, reading Wittgenstein as a babby philosopher is like learning to fly by clapping your buttcheeks before you've learned to crawl.

Then again, she wouldn't be any better off having read "pride and prejudice."
maybe: Read critique, but you don't get to identify or plant a flag for the groups identified in these books.

What is "recent Western history's crisis of identity" and how does it - indeed, how can it possibly - render what is, by your own admission, a "fantastical" line of inquiry "apposite," and, more importantly, what relation does the apposition of inquiry bear to the justification for that inquiry?
Suppose, for example, that I think the West is undergoing an "identity crisis," whatever that could mean. What then? That means that now is truly the time to give each other intellectual golden showers? Show your work on this one man.

of all the weaselly words that academics use (and those are countless), i really really hate the term "suggest."
as in, "X suggests that Y." or "X seems to indicate Y."
it's a license to simply make up whatever wild suppositional shit you want, since it's not falsifiable.

Ah yes, a CONTRAPUNTAL GEOGRAPHY. And not just "a" geography. No. MANY geographies. CONTRAPUNTAL geographies. Musical, geographies, of stories.
"Listen. It isn't as though 'geography' refers to a unitary field of study. No, no. Tsk, tsk. There are GEOGRAPHIES. Why? Well, because think about it! We are mapping the human genome, right? "MAPPING" the human genome! Well that's a GEOGRAPHY OF THE GENOME! But we're also GOOGLE MAPPING things. So that's a satellite-derived geography of our space.
But no, wait. It doesn't stop there. It is an internet-MEDIATED geography of space. And not just ANY space, for Google Maps gets *me* where *I* want to go. I can even re-route according to my preference!
Google Maps is, moreover, culturally-imbued! Why, for example, are *SOME* restaurants included at some level of granularity, but others require FURTHER granularity, or do not show up at all? Could there be implicit racism here? Does Middle Eastern show up as often as burger joints?
Google Maps, then, is a CYBER-MEDIATED GEOGRAPHY OF SUBJECTIVE CULTURAL SPACES.
Is it any wonder we must, then, use "geographies"?"
If people didn't actually make careers out of this, it'd be funny.

But the more significant thing is that theory took over the thinking function of fiction as well as the stylistic: it treated social theory in the way the novel always had, more for liberatory power than strict fidelity to scholarship, and offered wild suspicion as the route to personal enlightenment. It did the novelistic job of a whole period: it produced the works, at once literary and intellectual, that came to terms with the immediate aftermath of the Sixties.
Many of the classics of the era opened with feats of prose that American novels of the 1970s and 1980s rarely even attempted. Lévi-Strauss could describe a sunset in Tristes Tropiques for longer than a sun takes to set. Foucault did fourteen pages on a single painting, Velazquez’s “Las Meninas.” Then there was the drive and audacity of the History of Sexuality, Volume 1: “For a long time, the story goes, we supported a Victorian regime”—with the Proustian longtemps thrown off, with such brio, in a work of history!

I think we'd have to look at minority enrollment.
Most students are undeclared, followed by business. Minorities are no different. If minority students are that markedly inferior, they should fail out before choice of major matters.
I think it's more complicated than you suggest.

i was referring to the part where he blames grade inflation on white academics' desire to enroll blacks and not fail them out
i read it in 2003 though so i may be remembering wrong
edit: no, i don't think i was remembering wrong. you're talking about the part where the left encounters nietzsche. i'm talking about the part where earnest liberals at cornell eliminated failing grades, in "the student and the university." of course, the general trend may the cause of the specific problem

it's funny that we would ask philosophy students to read a lot of preliminary stuff for years before they approach wittgenstien, when wittgenstein himself was notorious for having read almost nothing outside of contemporary philosophy/logic + math.
he told his students that most philosophy was rubbish, and that they should come straight to his point and not bother with any of it.
reading ANYTHING by the typical undergrad is painful. i don't know if it matters whether they are writing about wittgenstein or something else. you either accept him as a departure point or you don't.

I am talking about late Wittgenstein, for one thing. You think ANY one of these people I'm talking about has ever picked up the Tractatus? Ever? I mean even once. Except, maybe, to flip through, see that the paragraphs were numbered, say, "eww, gross," and then go back to "WHEEE, LANGUAGE GAMES!"

Another reason that modern social science is falling apart is that it must reject reality. After the end of the civil rights movements America patted itself on the back for rejecting what it saw as the bigoted and unjustified beliefs of the whites that had oppressed blacks for centuries. The problem with this is that many racist views are actually substantially correct. There is certainly a genetic IQ gap, and IQ measures what most of us would consider to be "intelligence". As a consequence of this and other unpalatable conclusions, modern social scientists live in a world of bullshit where they have to make up explanations for the conclusions they refuse to accept.
This has, in turn, led to the humanities becoming a tool of progressives without any real moral values. Feminists basically make up statistics and facts in order to get the laws they want adopted. Critical race theorists focus on "narratives" rather than "evidence". Since the rest of the people in the humanities have to wallow in the same pig shit in order to avoid accepting reality they can't stand up and call this nonsense what it is.

What area of philosophy are you into?
Lucid Surveys on Pretentious Philosophers:
Russel. His treatment of Hegel is controversial and you should read Croce e.g. "What is living and dead in hegel?" or the recent Hegel bio by Pinkard to get the Continental view. Otherwise, brilliant.
Lossky is the credited Russian philo survey
Kolakowski is the Marxist philo survey

Honestly, it's epic. He's a libertarian socialist philosopher from Poland who came to the conclusion that fucking hey, marxism inevitably leads to totalitarianism and not true socialism.
He then basically essentializes and summarizes hundreds of philosophical primary sources to go through every current of Marxism starting with Marx himself.
Absolutely amazing scholarship, too. I have no clue how many languages the guy must've known. It's the most impressive bit of intellectual history I've read behind Russel.
