Murakami is a popular hipster choice. Go with Norwegian Wood. You don't actually have to read it, just tell people you're reading it.

Einstein's Relatibity book written for the layman and Hawking's Brief History of Time are also good for impressing dumbs with your "knowledge" of "quantum mechanics"

the movie A Brief History of Time by Errol Morris is actually quite awesome as it tells the story of how Hawking's illness converted him from a slacker to top in his field.

This book blew my mind but the title and author don't sound as impressive as a lesser book like the world is flat, guns germs, and steel, or post american world.

If I met someone who read this book irl, I'd automatically think they were a true intellectual and not just a philosophical poser. If I met a chick who read this book, I'd want to fuck her brains.

East of Eden, FTW.

1) The story and the characters are great.

2) Most people think it's too long, so they don't read it.

3) People have heard of it because of Oprah. However, that was a long time ago so no one will call you out.

4) It's an easy read.
