They're usually $1.50, or $2 if they shuck them for you. Sometimes I go to the market and just buy one and savor it while I'm buying other stuff.

But you get six free oysters when you buy an oyster knife from them.

As per directions I read online, I put the oysters in the freezer for three minutes, and then laid them out on a towel, ready to be shucked:

Oyster 1: As per instructions, I folded the towel over and got a good grip on the first oyster. I slid the oyster shucked into the hinge until I felt I had a good bearing. Then I twisted. Unfortunately, instead of the top popping open, the bottom of the oyster broke. I lost quite a bit of the brine:

Oyster 2:

Same thing happened, only this time it broke and crumbled. This time I ate it with some tabasco, which I had never tried before because I usually don't like tabasco. However, I happened to have some, since I saw some tiny bottles for sale somewhere and I bought it because it was cute:

Oyster 3:

This oyster was a tight little bitch that I had to chip away at until I could get my knife in. This time I was pretty careful to get the knife in farther, but then it just ended up breaking in the middle. This time I got a bowl, though, so I could catch the dripping brine:

Oyster 5: Ta da! This one didn't break. I really don't see what I did differently, but I guess with experience they stop breaking. However, I didn't do a great job of scraping off the top shell - I left a little oyster on top. I did greedily lick the top shell clean though.

Oyster 6: This one also didn't break. And on this one too, I also didn't do a perfect job of scraping the top. There was also some debris, as you can see, floating in the brine of oyster 6, so I had to pick that out.

The final product: Oyster 5, along with the bottom and top half of Oyster 6. I realize it would have been more elegant on a beautiful plate with crushed or cubed ice, but all I had was an ice pack.

As stated above, I usually can only eat a couple of oysters at a time, but these were good enough to eat 6.

I usually hate tabasco but tabasco went perfectly with them.

I was also told to eat the with vodka - like put an oyster in a shot glass, cover it with vodka, and then swallow the whole thing. I'll try that next time.

Shucking oysters did seem like a lot of work. I just wanted the experience of doing it. I'm sure I'd get faster with experience.

Also, a lot of people get injured the first time they shuck. So I was very careful about the pressure, which is probably why it took so long.

Most seafood restaurants are whack.

One of the best ones I've been to, though, was on Cape Cod, years ago. The special was $25 for two lobsters. It was right on a dock. All these people were playing around on the beach and working on their boats. In the evening they'd come in to the restaurant barefoot and covered with sand, and attack those lobsters with both hands.

Those are the sorts of seafood places I like brah.
