"Foreigners, Abandon All Hope?
Q: Let’s go back to why it’s so tough for foreigners in the China PE market. Do you have any foreign co-workers, or are they all locals from mainland China who worked or studied abroad and returned home?
A: There are fewer than 10-15 foreigners working full-time in the entire PE industry in China, and we all know each other. Most of us have been pushed out from deal work and, like me, focus more on fundraising and investor relations.
Q: OK, but I’m sure there must be a few foreigners there in high-up positions? One of our other interviewees mentioned that the MD at her firm was foreign.
A: There are some exceptions. For example, a few foreigners got in 5-10 years ago as founding MDs of their firms, so they have unique positions.
But the rest of us – other investment professionals – have been mostly pushed out. There was one other guy who was relocated to Asia by a major international PE shop, but he was then axed to free up the position so that a local could be brought in instead. And he was a senior officer with 10 years+ of PE experience and fluent Mandarin."
Fucking PWNED. u mad about this whytes? go back to fucking teaching English.

"Innovation Works
On September 7, 2009 [10] he announced details of a $115m venture capital (early-stage incubation and seed money business model) fund called "Innovation Works[11]" that aims to create five successful Chinese start-ups a year in internet and mobile internet businesses or in vast hosting services known as cloud computing. The Innovation Works fund has attracted several investors, including Steve Chen, co-founder of YouTube; Foxconn, the electronics contract manufacturer; Legend Holdings, the parent of PC maker Lenovo; and WI Harper Group.[12]
In September 2010, Mr. Lee described two Google Android projects for Chinese users: Tapas, a smart-phone operating system tailored for Chinese users and Wonderpod (Wandoujia), which allows downloading from Chinese video sites.[13]"

there are plenty of high ranking CCP officials within the circles of our family friends.
and like i said, most of my family are not in the U.S.
I'm not one of those Chinese immigrants who had one person naturalized, and then started applying immigration for their whole extended family.

"Scrilla Killa:
Foreign megafunds are definitely taken seriously in China. Bain Capital would be one example, they’ve done a lot of deals here.
That said – it’s pretty much impossible to get at a job at a megafund here as a foreigner – whether it be PE or REPE. I’ve never seen a single white guy and I’ve only seen a few ABCs — carlyle has 1 or 2 ABC kids I know of….
Almost all true foreign people are at smaller shops… and like the article said, there’s definitely less than 50 foreigners (w/ no Chinese heritage) total at all PE firms in the country. If you include REPE it’s probably a bit more than that… but I almost never meet a fellow white guy in the game over here. I met one or two spanish dudes at a European firm, but they’re being pushed into investor relations like the guy who wrote this article."
LMAO, even ABC's are getting PWNED.

trust me, this trend is true for or is spreading to the rest of East Asia. Japan is already doing the same.
and it's fine if Americans don't want to live in Asia. Asians don't want you there anyways.

i think a balance is needed here. having Westerners running everything just because they are slightly more qualified is equally as bad or worse.
that said, if you read the interview, it's not xenophobia for the sake of favoring locals. The Western expats simply cannot connect with and gain the trust of the Chinese entrepreneurs and that's detrimental to the type of work they have to do. Can you blame them considering how fucking racist, colonialist, entitled, and shitty in general most Western expats in Asia are?

when the inevitable economic collapse and subsequent peasant revolution sweeps the ccp from power, maybe you can find prestigious employment as finance minister to whatever warlords emerge out of the rubble
try and find someone like this guy:

the beijing accent thing is semi in jest. my beijing accent is subtle but definitely there, i mostly speak Standard Mandarin.
but you are kidding if you don't think a Beijing accented Mandarin speaker carries a certain cachet for doing business in China.
"The Beijing accent, as is consistent with native Beijingers, heavily employs the “er” sound at the end of words which wouldn’t normally make use of them. Aside from this most conspicuous trait, Beijingers tend to enunciate their tones with what I can only describe as authority. In a sense, it’s a melodious way of speaking Mandarin, although many Beijingers may likely refer to their spoken tongue as Beijing Hua (the language from which Standard Mandarin is based)."

why is being american an advantage for PR and advertising? is it the english skills?
would a technical background even be helpful when there are so many native chinese who pwn at that stuff? now that i think about it, why WOULD they hire an ABC? it seems the worst of both worlds given they aren't as strong technically while not being up to snuff culturally/linguistically AND not the feather-in-your-cap white boy that a company can use to look good.
shit, i can't find anything online about this.

i think she deals with mostly American clients who are doing business in China. she speaks perfect English obviously, and deals with Western clients well, and also speaks enough Chinese to communicate with the Chinese side. She is only competing with other Western females mostly for her job, and there aren't as many qualified Western women looking to work in China yet (compared to men), so ABC women do quite well.
a technical background is absolutely fine. One thing is that Chinese companies like technical degrees better than liberal arts degrees even for non-technical positions. Just look at the politicians in China, they all have engineering degrees.
i'm not sure why you think ABC's are not as strong technically. the best universities in sciences are still mostly in the U.S., so are many of the most cutting edge technology firms. In fact, some of the most desirable/successful expats are tech people that brought back marketable technical knowledge and founded companies based on that, e.g. Baidu, etc.
