Castaways in the summer.
Can't really go wrong at McFaddens, Hangge Uppe past 2am. You really want bars with younger/dumber girls like the DePaul scene. Do McGee's, State, anything in LP country off of Lincoln Ave.
Tell you what- I would add in Hub 51. To find legit kewl girls and not lame ones, you need to catch a "good bar" in its afterglow. Hub 51 used to be cool but now it has tapered off a bit since Paris Club opened (see also Rockit). So the cooler/younger non fake tan bitchy girls that wouldnt have gone to Hub when it was cool are now going to Hub. Thus, might be worth looking at.

Lit or transactional?
The answer used to be MWE without hesitation but they only pay $145k now and Katten pays $160k. Plus Katten got da mare which is cool.
I'd say MWE for lit, Katten for transactional unless you do trusts and estates then do MWE.
Let me edit this: I'm not even sure I would take MWE for lit now that I think of it. I think I would take Katten unless I wanted trusts and estates which MWE is well known for.

I think (aside from Kirkland) they are all equally fucked. MB gets pounded on a bit more for whatever reason. What has hurt them are the smaller summer classes but they are growing it this year from what i have heard. Sidley actually posted higher revenue losses than MB last year but it wasn't a big difference.
I think it's just in the ether that MB is somehow worse off and that isn't necessarily reality, moreso just rumor. MB's focus on litigation probably hurt them a bit. They de-equitized partners in a very public way before the market turned which hurt their prestige. The other firms had de-equitized partners too but did it privately and were spared the fallout.
I think MB will be fine in the long run, these things ebb and flow.

That sort of motel is a well kept secret in Chicago. I remember when the Paxton hotel was incinerated in the 90's and killed a bunch of elderly and homeless people. It was sitting on LaSalle Street in Old Town/Gold Coast and nobody ever really knew it was there.
Same with the Cedar Hotel on Cedar/Rush/State. Total hangout for pushers, pimps, homeless, etc. and the yuppie crowd drinks at the bar that used to be outside of it all summer long.
Winston Manor was near where a friend of mine lived growing up before Wicker Park "turned." People would just kind of wander outside of it. I never went inside but it looked like a school from the outside with a sprinkling of urine caked elders hobbling about outside of it.

So what's between Lawrence and Foster?
And if the river is the boundary, where the fuck did Blagojevich live? He lived west of the river. Surely his mansion was prestigious.
And wtf is Ravenswood Manor?
It's very confusing.

I don't think Ravenswood Manor is a "real neighborhood" in the sense that any native Chicagoan would know where to find it. It's like Bucktown- nobody called that area "Bucktown" in 1990. I have no idea what is between Lawrence and Foster, I guess it sort of depends how far west Uptown extends.
I think of this more in terms of what high school the kids go to. I think once you get north of Lawrence it's either Amundsen or Senn depending on how far west you are.
Blago was TTT.

Bartlit Beck would be my choice because I prefer litigation but that isn't really fair. Saying you prefer Bartlit Beck is like saying you prefer flying a private learjet over United. No shit but good luck achieving it.
Corp: Kirkland and Sidley are superb. Probably Skadden too. If you want tax, Skadden or even Mayer Brown. Bankruptcy is Kirkland and there is no peer. Keep in mind that the corporate-slanted Vault rankings really mean shit for Chicago. I don't think Latham is particularly well respected here, for example.
Lit: Bartlit Beck obviously but more realistically Kirkland, Mayer Brown, Winston or Jenner with Kirkland as the obvious favorite. I would say Sidley also but Chambers has them as Band 2 for Chicago Lit but that is probably inaccurate and likely to change. I like free market approaches so I guess that gives a slight edge to the free market firms. I guess it depends what type of litigation one wants to do.
Keep in mind that, from a junior associate's POV, Winston is far more leveraged which I think = more shitwork compared to Kirkland/MB/Sidley which are closer to 1:1 in their lit departments but I could be wrong. My friends at each of the above firms are happy for the most part.
With money as your motivator, you have to go Kirkland. Their bonuses are far superior in every way and they are market leaders in every category. The hours suck but they aren't working a hell of a lot more than the folks at the other places and are compensated better. The bonus structure at Sidley and MB is the same, I have heard people complain about bonuses at both so I don't think one is better than the other. I think MB went off lockstep in associate increases, I am pretty sure you need 2,000 hrs to stay with your class but that isn't hard to hit for litigation juniors. Sidley is still lockstep as far as I know.
From a litigation perspective, Kirkland/MB/Sidley/Winston/Jenner all put people into the ND-IL USAO, all send people to clerk after a year or two at the firm if they want it (probably Sidley and Mayer moreso), so I really think the exit options are the same at all of them. A lot of it will come down to the type of work you do once you get there so it probably makes sense to go somewhere that you feel like might give you more substantial work quicker (because of relationships, a particular specialty you might have/develop that they do, etc.).
This is probably not the case with corporate. I think Sidley/Kirkland are the gold standard in corp and probably do have better exit options than the others.
I will say this- from a sheer happiness perspective, the happiest "biglaw" people I know in Chicago are at Schiff Hardin, Neal Gerber and Grippo.
Re: Streeterville- I wouldn't live there. It is too touristy/officey/hospitaly for my taste. Nice place to spend time but there is no neighborhood feel which is a big part of what makes the other parts of Chicago so great. There is also TTT public transit in streeterville.

No problem.
Keep in mind that Chicago was totally owned during ITE. NYC and DC seem to have recovered a bit, not even close for Chicago.
To give you some perspective, Sidley and Kirkland have the biggest classes in town and are roughly 50% of what they were at pre-ITE levels. Mayer has dipped even lower (though they are increasing this year) but they also take some pre-clerks as summers so it isn't quite as low as it seems. Jenner and Winston have also dropped precipitously.
Sounds like litigation is more your speed (judging by the basis of your clerkship) but I could be wrong.
If you are clerking on the COA, were t6 and on law review, you should give Bartlit Beck a try. They hire SCOTUS clerks but have also taken plenty of COA clerks.
If you are undecided on litigation, I would go to a firm that is well balanced- Sidley and Kirkland would be ideal. I get the sense that Sidley is more appreciative of clerkships than Kirkland but, again, that is probably not totally true. Also helps if your clerking for a judge in the 7th circuit.
If you are set on lit, then I think you throw Mayer into the mix (and probably also Jenner and Winston). If you want appellate work, it's Mayer hands down. Part of the reason MB got owned a bit harder by ITE was because of a real focus on litigation over there. If you look at their website, their litigation ranks are pretty impressive, I am not sure I would say the same about corporate. For a junior level interested in litigation, probably beneficial to have smaller classes at the moment because you might get cooler experience.
There are some nice boutiques to consider as well. Barack Ferrazano (positive I spelled that wrong), Eimer Stahl (bunch of old Sidley antitrust people), Grippo & Elden, etc.
The harder question is what to make of the more "national" firms. Chicago is very provincial- its homegrown "Big 5" carry the day here (Kirkland, Sidley, Mayer Brown, Winston, Jenner). Of the national firms with offices here, Skadden seems to have done the best and getting into that rotation. Latham's Chicago office is not particularly well regarded especially when compared to its other branches. Jones Day does well here. Perkins Coie actually has a nice setup for certain kinds of work.
Chicago is just nothing like NYC which has a stable of powerhouses that exist there and nowhere else. It is probably more like Washington in which those practicing in the city would think more highly of "lower ranked firms" (and I use that term relatively) like Akin Gump, Patton Boggs, etc. than they would of more "highly ranked" national firms that are not homegrown like STB, Sidley, Jones Day, etc. Obviously people will respect Covington, WilmerHale, W&C everywhere much the same as Sidley and Kirkland are respected everywhere.

No problem man, xoxo has been plenty helpful to me over the years.
Congrats on your clerkship, quite an achievement.
BB would still look at you if you like won moot court, did some national trial team that won, were on law review and had super high grades but it is a stretch. If you did another clerkship with COA you'd have a shot. Look at their website for a view on who goes there.
I also think this board's obsession with corp side having the only exit options isnt entirely true. Litigators can make it happen, you just need something else on the ball, in my opinion.
In my experience, Sidley and MB are clerkship whores more than the others.
Good luck.

1) I dont know how troublesome it would be, it would help if you are an athlete or something. I have seen it done but it is somewhat rare. CGWBTs are probably likely to stick to those they know from high school/college but it is definitely doable.
2) I would put this at the same level of difficulty as question 1. You will not see as much diversity of couples as you would in London or NYC. Not even close. Sad but true.
3) I think it is very easy. It depends on what industry you work in but Chicagoans are pretty open to meeting all sorts of people and wouldn't be hostile to someone that wasn't from here. I know plenty of folks that launched out and made Chicago home and have been very happy with that decision. THe trick would be befriending a couple of lifers who would integrate you in pretty quickly.
4) Neither. Chicago is just Chicago.

I know tons. The ones I am friends with are great but I have met plenty of tools from there too. Hard to stereotype a school of 4,000+.
It definitely is NOT the best public school in the state in terms of academics, however.
Northside Prep/Payton/Whitney Young/IMSA run circles around it but it obviously isn't an apples-to-apples comparison because you have to test into each of those. When it comes to straight up attendance area schools, NT is tops. It has produced plenty of alphas including rahmbo.

If by diverse you mean 98% Asian, then yes, Payton is diverse.
The kids at Payton and Northside are far more impressive than the kids at Latin and Parker. Plenty of Latin and Parker kids try to test into Payton and Northside and the few that make the cut almost always go.

You will get a lot of debate on this but for purely city based private high schools, I think it goes:
1. Lab
2. Latin
3. St. Ignatius
4. Parker
5. Morgan Park Academy
Include the burbs:
1. Lab
2. Lake Forest Country Day
3. Latin
4. North Shore Country Day
5. St. Ignatius
6. Parker
7. Loyola Academy
(Steep drop)
8. Fenwick
9. Regina
Keep in mind that Northside Prep and Walter Payton exceed every school except probably Lab.

My knowledge of the suburbs is pretty TTT and that extends to their schools too. I can tell you which ones are good at sports but that's about it.
I think most of the massive 3,500+ student schools entitled Glenbard/Glenbrook/Naperville/Aurora + Some sort of compass direction (East, West, South, North) are all very good schools.
I think New Trier is probably a cut above because they have been doing so great for so long. Lake Forest Academy is also very strong. Highland Park HS, Deerfield, very good. Naperville schools seem high quality. I was always partial to OPRF, think they have a nice mix of diversity and quality academics there.
I have always thought very, very highly of Evanston Township HS. Hinsdale Central is probably very good too.
I am sad to report that there are really very few high quality non-magnet publics in the city of Chicago which is my area of knowledge. Von Steuben, Lincoln Park HS, Taft are all very good schools but I think some if not all of them have some sort of magnet/IB program that is really a cut above even the best publics in the burbs.
All of Chicago's selective enrollment schools are exceptional all the way down to the newer ones (King, Westinghouse, Lindbloom).

Much like colleges, all of these schools are good at different things.
Want an intense academic environment starting in fucking kindergarten? UChicago Lab.
Want no grading, no rules and fingerpainting in 10th grade? Parker.
Want probably the best all round mix of academics and social preparation? Latin.
Want diversity, a (slight) upgrade in athletics, a little discipline and want to be in politics? St. Ignatius.
Want an athletics powerhouse mixed with top-notch academics? Loyola.
Want to get arguably the best education in the city and mugged routinely? Lincoln Park IB program.
