If you're talking about domestic disputes, yes, both as a prosecutor and as a legal assistance attorney.

If you're talking about same sex marriage, I've given training on the topic but I've never had to address an issue.

I would say that they are legal assistance, military justice and administrative law. I guess you could call op law a core competency, but I don't think many captains get meaningful experience in this area even if they're assigned to it. It's probably a lot more of an issue underway on a ship.

I don't want to answer the first for privacy purposes. The Army doesn't have tracks like the Navy does. I would ultimately like to be a military judge but that's a long way off and there is no one path to get there.

How is the command structure? Is it mostly JAGs reporting to JAGs? Are deployments pretty common for your community?

When the Army moved to the BCT model post-9/11, an O4 "Brigade Judge Advocate" position was created. He essentially works for the bde cdr, but he will still have a JAG in his rating chain (normally the SJA or DSJA). The trial counsel for each bde, in some cases, also got pushed down to the bde level, rather than working in a division office. So if you are a TC who works primarily out of the bde or a BJA, you will spend a lot of time answering to non-JAGs. Everyone else, except for O5+ is answering to other JAGs.

Deployments were very common up until about a year ago.

It's not very competitive and the National Guard is even less so. I think you get a five point hiring boost after you are "veteran" which I think means 180 days on active duty. So you'll have to get mobilized. I'm sure there's also a non-numerical boost.

It used to be easy. I would say now it's very difficult. And as mentioned, you have to wait four years. So if reserve is better than nothing, go for it. If you just want to backdoor your way onto active duty, prepare for a long ordeal.

Yes. Being a federal or state employee is the best deal for reservists, because these employers are very accommodating to reservists.

It's one weekend per month and two weeks per year.

Even if you raise your hand and jump up and down, you probably won't get deployed. That could change quickly if there is another war.

You can take two four day passes or leave. If you take the passes, you will have to be in Charlottesville for three duty days inbetween. If you take leave for the duration, you stop collecting per diem, which is about $600.

I like being an attorney in the Army and I would never trade with your average line officer. I do sometimes feel like I'm not a real Soldier, but then I look at what other staff officers do and they're even bigger paper pushers than the attorneys. So I don't worry too much about it.

It is. Especially if you have a government job, military reserve is super sweet. If I don't go career, I'll definitely stay in the reserves.

Why did you pick Army over Navy/USMC/USAF? Would you say that, on average, USMC JAG are the most hardcore?

When I went through you didn't take the oath until Charlottesville. So that was at least two weeks into JAOBC. Anytime before that, you can leave.

Any insight on whether they are doing only one board again next year? I didn't get picked up after interning, and I graduate in June. This is still my dream job though, and right now I'm on the fence between giving up on it or taking a gamble on the next board.

My problem with the Reserves is that I have about a month to decide whether I want to gamble on the board or sign a 3 year big-state-gov contract. I don't think the state would look fondly upon me scuttling off to Charlottesville in February for a few months.

well, it'd probably be at least a year until you could go to jaobc and your state probably has a military leave program for state employees.

They're boring but it's actually fairly interesting how the meaning of proximate cause varies so much depending on who is doing/reviewing the FLIPL. I think it's a ripe area for regulatory clarification.

I assume you have some sincere reason for wanting to join the military, beyond getting out of BIGLAW hell. Just write about that sincerely. The other thing you need to do is win over your FSO. That's becoming more important as things get more competitive. Look the part, meaning conservative makeup, tie your hair up, get fit if you're not already. And be able to speak intelligently about what JAs do. Lastly, be positive about things that turn some people off: doing PT, moving every few years, etc.

I've never been in the reserves, but from what I've seen the weekends are fixed. The two weeks can be satisfied any number of ways...e.g. go to Charlottesville for two weeks for a course, mobilize to Germany for two weeks and do some BS work, etc.

Yes.

It helps, but only marginally. I was considered "the top" law contract when I got selected. The board was certainly impressed by my school, but I also had the best PFT and a recommendation from a colonel.

Most of the JAGOFFs I interacted with in the army were terrible. A minority were decent. But the JAGOFFs were at least better than the soviet-level ordinary officers assigned to do 15-6 investigations. I got out as an O3 after two commands.
