Sure, they can get a 9-5 F500 job, but the type of people who work at MBB aren't going to be applying for those jobs. Nor will people be actively recruiting them. Nor will their former firm want them to go to those jobs (MBB cares a lot about where their alums end up).
They're going to go after the big/prestigious companies, in prestigious roles that certainly aren't 9-5. I know two people who have gone into very good companies on the business side (Facebook & Oracle) and they are still working 60 hour weeks. |

I dated a MBB consultant for nearly 2 years when I was in biglaw. Same hours, but I got to come home to my apartment every night (for the most part) while she traveled every week.
I also made more $$.
When she was promoted to manager she started to make more because she got quarterly distributions, but the lifestyle was SPS (even compared to biglaw). That being said, the exit options are nice (constantly being chased by google, apple, etc) |

The more front office type gigs burn people out really quick but in my area people happily last 30-40 years making north of $250k for most of it and doing very little actual work. I think its kind of a life hack to do a few years at a firm, go in-house at a bank and then just coast on auto pilot for 30 years doing largely repetitive tasks and managing firms that do the hard stuff.
