Rep. Virginia Foxx On People With Student Loans: ‘I Have Very Little Tolerance’ For Them
Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) took on a unique enemy during a radio interview yesterday: people with student loans.
Though many politicians sympathize with those who are saddled with exorbitant student debt, Foxx, who chairs the House subcommittee on higher education, had a different take. Appearing on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show, the North Carolina congresswoman recounted her own experience paying for college, where she worked her way through and graduated after seven years. Foxx then pointed to her own experience as justification for why she has “very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt.” “There’s no reason for that,” she concluded:
FOXX: I went through school, I worked my way through, it took me seven years, I never borrowed a dime of money. He borrowed a little bit because we both were totally on our own when we went to college, totally. [...] I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that. We live in an opportunity society and people are forgetting that. I remind folks all the time that the Declaration of Independence says “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” You don’t have it dumped in your lap.

Dear Congresswoman:
I have very little tolerance for entitled boomers enjoying mortgage bailouts, Soc. Security payments, Medicare benefits and pensions (all of which I'll likely never receive) thanks to my tax dollars. When you graduated from college in 1968, a student working 6.2 hours a week at minimum wage could pay for college.

She's a stupid fucking hypocrite like all politicians.
That being said, I agree with her up to a point. Yes, tuition HAS skyrocketed at a rate far exceeding inflation every year, and we need to address this as a nation. And yes, the average student now is going to have much more problems "working their way" through school than a Boomer did.
That being said, if you are a Cali bro, go to community college for 2 years, then transfer to a UC and or CSU, work, get scholarships, etc. you should be able to graduate with a minimal amount of debt.

OMFG
"Matthew Shepard Act
In April 2009, Foxx expressed opposition to the Matthew Shepard Act, claiming that the murder of Matthew Shepard was not a hate crime. While debating the act at the House of Representatives, which was attended by Matthew Shepard's mother, she called the incident a "very unfortunate incident" but also "we know that that young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery. It wasn't because he was gay." She continued that "It's really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing hate crimes bills."[11] However, that statement is disputed by the police reports, the ensuing police investigation and by the trial testimony of the accused themselves."

Health care debate
When commenting on the House version of the reform bill that funds counseling for end-of-life issues, Foxx said, "Republicans have a better solution that won't put the government in charge of people's health care," and "(The plan) is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government."[13] She later said that "we have more to fear from the potential of [the Affordable Health Care for America Act] passing than we do from any terrorist right now in any country."[14][15]

Also, this is a prime example of why people expecting a student loan bailout (beyond IBR) are just wrong.
The current people in power went to school at such a different time that there is a vast disconnect between their own experiences and what's happening right now. You can't empathize with someone's problem when you don't even realize there is a problem.
The costs of education and the issue of student loans won't be addressed in a significant manner until people of our generation start assuming positions of power in politics.

Our generation = Gen Y, imo.
Honestly, the plight of Gen X isn't too far off from the Boomers. They went to college when it was still pretty cheap.
Most of these problems have really accelerated in the 2000s when the millenials started hitting adulthood.

explain how i'm wrong. your first argument was "ohhh you just want to talk about yourself and don't have anything *interesting* to say about the student loan *problem*".
lol
it's amazing that we live in a day and age where saying that people shouldn't go to colleges that they can't afford is considered a stupid and uninteresting comment. why don't you tell me something interesting about the education problem in america? or are you just going to megapost shit like "you have a mental disorder" because you're getting fucking raped in this argument?

Yes. We really need to address the issue of how tuition gains are far exceeding inflation.
The only way this is remotely affordable anymore is basically community college 2 years - transfer to State U.
And yea, even the, State U is getting pricey. I think annual expenses at like CAL would be about 20k now.

no; we should demand that money back from the universities and their administrators. they willingly took in what is essentially federal money even though they knew that their "products" - their degrees - were increasingly worthless in the employment market.
they were in the best position to know exactly how valuable or non-valuable their degrees actually are/were.
they had a moral duty to warn prospective students and the federal government that their degrees were no longer capable of providing students with jobs that would allow for debt repayment - and they failed to do so.

the colleges HAVE THE DAMN MONEY. once again, i assume you are interested in the money actually being paid back?
well, broke-assed post-college basement losers living at home are not going to BE ABLE to pay that money back.
so what then? you can either give up like a little bitch, or you can follow the money to the colleges.
which is it?

the trend so far is that college grads who can't get "real" jobs largely just give up. they simply aren't willing to work at a fast-food place at minimum wage and have a chunk of it taken for student loans. they would rather drop out of the economy entirely, and live off of under-the-table work, family, girlfriends, etc.
they don't (generally) have kids, get married, buy houses or new cars, or participate in the wider american economy. the breeding is largely left to immigrants and true poors who never had any pretensions of something like "college."
i can't imagine that you consider those to be positive trends.
part of the purpose of having a "society" in the first place was to provide a framework in which new generations could be given a solid foundation in life, and given opportunities to make their way in the world without the wolves eating them alive in the crib.
now we appear to be doing the opposite to some extent. we financialized kids and turned them into vehicles for debt speculation. it's a novel experiment for sure, but it doesn't seem to be turning out very well.

also, think about it - would YOU work at mcdonald's if you had to fork over 15% or more of your $7.25/hr to student loans?
could you even afford to get to the worksite on that kind of salary? that's not enough to pay for a car + gas + maintenance + insurance.

all of the top state schools (Michigan, Texas, UVA, Florida, all the UC's, Washington, UNC, etc.) have generous spot allowances for in-state transfers from community college. anyone in those states can get a degree from a top school for very little money if they're willing to do their first years at CC, live at home and work/save money. hell, ANYONE can. if you don't live in a state with a good state school, just move to California and work a job for a year mowing lawns or working retail or whatever. establish residency in the state and then one year later start going to CC, then transfer to Berkeley or UCLA. christ, if you were mowing lawns in Argentina for a year for zero dollars it would be considered an amazing "gap year" experience for you to "gain perspective" before matriculating at harvard or yale.

I would still say that a decent number of people can make it through UG without major debt. If you didn't, you were striving.
It also goes without saying that UG is no longer sufficient for employment unless you are looking for secretarial work, military officer, or professional sports.
With the exception of science Ph.D. programs and other special fully-funded programs, very few people can get a graduate or professional degree without significant debt.
Foxx has proven herself a full on retard on multiple occasions. If the large university in her district wasn't also full of retards they would send her out on a rail.

Not if your major in something useful like engineering or accounting.
If you are good at math/ science, do engineering.
If you suck at the above, just do accounting, bro.

i got an engineering degree at a T20 engineering school.
i am 5-10 years out. out of 62 people in our graduating class, 3 are engineers. most went on to Ph.D. programs, med school, law school, whatever.
"go to engineering school ---> be an engineer" isn't massive flame, but it's pretty fucking close. there are no jobs.

I was flaming.
I think this is a horrible path unless you're not that bright. Going to some TTT college with scholarship is better than going to CC, but I guess if you can't swing it, you should consider.
Not everyone deserves better than commuter schools which is one of the problems.

LOL! this was my advice for the few kids who can MAYBE claim there are no inexpensive decent colleges in their state. i mean i know the UC's all have expensive tuition, but i don't know that there are no schools in california that offer a solid education with tuition of around $8-10k/yr.
ASSUMING that such states exist, i suggested that kids could move to a state where there is an affordable school. and if you just HAVE to attend a "top" school, then pick north carolina or virginia. establish residency there and go to UVA or UNC for ~$9k/yr in tuition.
and of course i agree with you about the middle ground. my argument is not "all people must go to state schools" it's "people should not take on educational debt they can't afford just because it's there." if you get a good financial aid package from johns hopkins and you'd rather go there than michigan, then by all means, do it. but the idea that kids have just been cheated by the system and have NO ALTERNATIVE to going $100,000 in to debt for college is absurd. people who say this just want to have it both ways: they're pissed at the ludicrious debt load they have to carry but they are ENRAGED at the suggestion that they can't afford to go to the BEST USNWR college they get into because dammit they need the validation of telling their parents friends they go to a "TOP 20" college, and the thought of going to their state school with all those people who got 1250s on their SAT would make them feel like they aren't a special brilliant unique flower.

i have very little tolerance for her health care needs.
but yes, the pumo arguing that huge numbers of people waste money at overpriced schools is right.

That does not solve the problem.
The real problem is INSANE tuition costs that you never find in any other country on EARTH and that has never occurred in HUMAN HISTORY.
I agree though, you have to reform student loans, but also cut the fucking interest rate. Forgive loans after 10 years. People shouldn't go bankrupt trying to get a "good" education, and just telling ppl to go to JC's is fuckin stupid and doesn't solve anything. Then you just have a society where teh top 1% can afford univs and everyone else is shit out of luck and goes to a JC. That sounds like a pretty shitty society to me.

well, i just checked and the max stafford loans u can borrow is not a lot, 7.5k max for UG
http://www.staffordloan.com/stafford-loan-info/
so the prob is the fucking private loans that just rape ppl cause the interest accrues while u are in school and the rate is usually higher
and fuck man, stafford subsidized loans rate goes up from 3 percent somethin to 6.8 percent next year.. WTF.. .
this is insane.. just kill an entire generation

There are two root causes to this problem
-The effective prohibition on using intelligence/aptitude tests to select people for jobs is causing employers to rely on degrees instead
-Readily available, non-discharge student loans
I thought that this was common XOXO wisdom

it is retarded we even have this discussion.
a normal society would want ppl to go to college or at least endeveor to go to college but we are just creating a society where its only the top 1% that can do anything
everyone else is shit out of luck.. we are going to hell with this attitude

Damn this is infuriating. My parents used to do shit like this all the time by telling us how they worked worked odd jobs through college to pay for it themselves. They finally shut the fuck up once they saw our tuition rates and realized you would need a high paying full-time job to even make a dent in tuition.
It also reminds me of my dad would tell us stories about how he nearly flunked out of high school several times. He went to HYP for college. All he had to do was apply and be willing to pay tuition.
Fuck this generation dudes

This is funny, because when I posted the above I KNEW you were going to come back with the "I don't think university tuition is what's bankrupting Greece"
Your response is truly myopic to the point of stupidity. Obviously no one is asserting that government funded higher education is the single reason for economic problems. In fact, no one asserts that ANY one thing is the single reason for economic problems.
The point, which you missed, is that countries whose governments actively participate in private industries have bad track records (Spain, Italy, Greece)

not really
problem is a having mixed quasi private system
you could have a perfectly rational wholly gov run system of higher education.

The Room/Board/Books/Travel expenses are worst case. If you live in a single, have the most expensive meal plan, and buy new books from the campus bookstore, it's going to be expensive.
You can live off campus with roommates, not eat 3 meals/day at the dining hall, and use the internet to get used books.
Only the straight tuition rates are comparable.

Question for Foxx:
Assume the student has average living expenses and goes to the average state university. If the student works 20 hours per week and receives no outside assistance, how much must the student make per hour to incur no debt?

the demographics ensure that our generation will be fucked. there's no way around it.
the only opportunity left in America is in tech, and you don't have to live here to do that. all other industries are fucked except finance or one of the industries like law that feeds off of finance, in which case you'll have a few years of working like a dog in a shitty environment to suck away whatever profits you can from the rest of the economy while adding no value. meanwhile, you'll be absolutely fucked by taxes because of the demographics and the rest of the country will see you as rich and evil and be OK with taking 50% of your income because they are in one of the other sectors that is declining.
don't know where i'm going yet.
