"I am not a welfare queen," says Melissa Bruninga-Matteau.

That's how she feels compelled to start a conversation about how she, a white woman with a Ph.D. in medieval history and an adjunct professor, came to rely on food stamps and Medicaid. Ms. Bruninga-Matteau, a 43-year-old single mother who teaches two humanities courses at Yavapai College, in Prescott, Ariz., says the stereotype of the people receiving such aid does not reflect reality. Recipients include growing numbers of people like her, the highly educated, whose advanced degrees have not insulated them from financial hardship.

"I find it horrifying that someone who stands in front of college classes and teaches is on welfare," she says.

"Highly educated" made me chuckle.

I wonder how long one might slum it on loan money + $10-20k salary for the opportunity to scratch some weird medieval fetish in front of a roomful of bored undergrads.

And I get a kick out of "welfare queen" coming from someone who probably participates in Renaissance festivals.

As part of transitioning to a sensible model of higher education, probably 60-70% of professors need to basically lose their jobs and retool themselves.

LOL, just LOL at shitprofs teaching shitsubjects at shitcolleges complaining about their shitpay, when said colleges already charge tuition well in excess of the (non-existant) value they provide, and would promptly go out of business if not for federally subsidized loans

there are people who did humanities phd at top schools and then did cpa or jd to become 'real' proefssionals, while teaching a class or two for pure interest. however, these are genuinely bright and versatile people.

there are people with mediocre intellect who can't switch fields. they are not that bright in their own fields anyway.

by the way, if she could find a teaching job at a community college, she'll have a cool, credited life. does not have to be a professor at a research university, for which she is not that eligible anyway.

yes, I mean full-time job at CC.

one of my relatives is teaching at CC even with a phd and he says a professor at a Research university earns more or less ... but with far more prestige.

actually, community college jobs would not be THAT difficult to find if her credentials have been better.

why don't people in shit higher ed gun for high school teaching jobs? those pay much better with better benefits and it's not like they couldn't teach at a local shit community college at night.

some high schools would dig getting a phd on staff and would probably eventually let them teach AP classes or other specialized stuff for the AP kids. i had a teacher like that in HS.

People ITT act like there are no adjunct science or math profs.

I had a math prof who was basically begging students to write him good reviews at the end of the year because needed that extension to keep his 20K income going for his two classes he taught.

I guess its becoming less of a problem though because universities are just dumping these guys for TA's.

I hate to say it, but society should not punish people so severely for taking risks. This person could have ended up teaching in her field at a highly rated university, but didn't make it. So her only option is to teach as an adjunct at a cc for a few thousand? That's pretty severe. Obviously, once you realize the game, you have to retool yourself into a skillset that works for the economy. But I applaud her for going for the $80K/yr tenured job, even if she failed.
