Professors who need food stamps [article]

"I am not a welfare queen," says Melissa Bruninga-Matteau.
That's how she feels compelled to start a conversation about how she, a white woman with a Ph.D. in medieval history and an adjunct professor, came to rely on food stamps and Medicaid. Ms. Bruninga-Matteau, a 43-year-old single mother who teaches two humanities courses at Yavapai College, in Prescott, Ariz., says the stereotype of the people receiving such aid does not reflect reality. Recipients include growing numbers of people like her, the highly educated, whose advanced degrees have not insulated them from financial hardship.
"I find it horrifying that someone who stands in front of college classes and teaches is on welfare," she says. |

I wonder how long one might slum it on loan money + $10-20k salary for the opportunity to scratch some weird medieval fetish in front of a roomful of bored undergrads.
And I get a kick out of "welfare queen" coming from someone who probably participates in Renaissance festivals. |

one of my relatives is teaching at CC even with a phd and he says a professor at a Research university earns more or less ... but with far more prestige.
actually, community college jobs would not be THAT difficult to find if her credentials have been better.

some high schools would dig getting a phd on staff and would probably eventually let them teach AP classes or other specialized stuff for the AP kids. i had a teacher like that in HS. |

I had a math prof who was basically begging students to write him good reviews at the end of the year because needed that extension to keep his 20K income going for his two classes he taught.
I guess its becoming less of a problem though because universities are just dumping these guys for TA's. |
