In most if not all jurisdictions she will get an elective share even if she is totally cut out of the will, as long as they are married when he dies.

If my parents died today? Pretty TTT...just under a million probably. My parents started out as penniless proles and worked their way up, they've only been making respectable money since I was in college.

But my parents have 8 years left until retirement, so that should grow substantially baring some kind of disaster.

An unexpected health crisis could wipe them out and you think nothing of them spending $400,000 on your school and you wanted them to buy you a fucking house.

It is by XO standards.

My dad has a pension coming, so my parent's saving needs aren't as large as those of people in our generation. There are a few other mitigating factors that I won't talk about on XO too.

But yes, my parents spend an obscene percentage of their money on me. I'm not complaining.

From my parents? I have no idea. If they croaked right now I'm sure there would be some kind of life insurance. Nice house in flyover country worth b/w $300 and $350k. Dad's business which is basically a patient/client list, no idea how that would be valued. Then whatever they've saved. Would be split among siblings.

$0. Even if my parents have anything, I'm sure it will go to my sister, since she's in her mid-20s, currently unemployed, and has never held a decent job.

They probably have a net worth of $300k. Don't know how dad will ever retire. They had a shitload of kids (7)

If they live to a decent age life insurance ain't shit unless they pour obscene amounts of money into it or it's included through a pension or business. Most people who die at 85+ will only see about 60-100k in life insurance.

guessing only 300k liquid assets after split b/w my 2 siblings. but my parents paid for my entire undergrad and law school so i'm not complaining. my dad said straight up he'd rather pay for my tuition now and reduce the amount of my inheritance so creditors wouldn't rob me at a 8% loan interest rate. good dood.

~$150K in real estate. If my parents write a will, more will go to my sis. But I suspect they are not responsible enough for that so it will be split 50/50.

People in my family just don't die so I won't be getting any money for a long time so I haven't bothered to ask about my inheritance.

Who "asks" their parents about that? I can't imagine having that conversation.

in my experience at some point its something parents just discuss with kids (usually long before they're near death) briefly and move on

About $110k. I'd have to split my parents' house and maybe a small savings account/CD with my sister.

Very little. My parents were worth over $7mm about 12 years ago when they first retired, now worth about $2mm, will have very little at the end.

If my parents die right now, probably 3-4 million.

If they die in forty years, after they've had long retirements to blow through money and abandon saving or making investments? Couple hundred thousand. fracking boomers.

Most of people on this thread don't realize that if their parents are in their 50's or early 60's right now and are retiring or close, by the time their parents are gone, there will have a small fraction of what they do now.

Just received 200k inheritance from grandfather who passed. My parents inherited a lot more but when they both die I already have another $2M set up in trust funds/life insurance.

Thinking about using the inheritance as a down payment on a very nice home. I'm midlevel biglaw so my main concern is whether my current income level is sustainable to meet home obligations month to month. But in the back of my mind I assume my parents would be there to bail me out if I got laid off and had to take a lower paying job.
