It's worth watching but I wasn't blown away by it. I think it was kind of groundbreaking for its time but maybe doesn't hold as much power now. I like other Kurosawa better - Throne of Blood and Ran are pretty dope.

Even though Kurosawa says there’s no definitive interpretation of the story, the Woodcutter’s account of the rape/murder is obviously “true” considering he was the only disinterested observer.

Bottom line is woman incited her husband and her rapist to fight for her, hid in fear when swords clashed, fled when rapist killed husband and then lied about it in court. The interesting element is that the rapist and the husband (speaking through a medium) made the duel sound heroic and honorable when really it was pathetic because neither wanted to fight and both were terrified of dying.

The title rashomon is a bastardizafion of Rajomon which means something like “the gate on the city walls.” I think the title signifies the gap through which the truth eventually sneaks past our blind spots.
