Claiming any US helos is "designed to operate in mountains" is horseshit. The Mi-8MTV-5 with its TV3-117VMA SBM1V engine currently holds the world altitude record for an in-service helicopter at 8,100 meters and it holds the time to climb record at 14 minutes 9 seconds. It was recently bested by its intended replacement the Mi-38 which set set an all time altitude record of 8,800 meters. US helicopters are nowhere in this league and have horrendous time to climb numbers and in the mountains have max speeds of like 80mph. Russian helos just do circles around them literally.
This is why Russia dominates the heavy and super heavy helo market with the US and EU relegated to fighting for the light weight and medium segment of the market where the Russians just dont bother with an entrant. |
