the general slowness of progress relative to expectations even from just 15 years ago.
oh, there was so much fucking hope back then. oil would never again rise above $15/barrel because of all the shit we'd be suckling out of the caspian sea basin.
genomics would start curing diseases within a decade. the internet - which had gone from gopher servers and simple text sites in the early 90's to tricky java applets and free webmail by '97 - would become EXPONENTIALLY faster, and within a decade, we'd have high-def 3D real-time web holography. a hooker in russia could handjob you across the world from her apartment.
the new web economy would render us so prosperous that the west would basically become a leisure colony, with third-worlders able to do whichever trivial labors remained for (from their point of view) outstanding pay.
this didn't really happen, i don't think. and hence, we don't have the nostalgia we thought we'd have. 80's/90's nostalgia ought to have been a sort of "my, how far have we come!" fond retrospective, like a man who used to live in a valley now able to overlook it from his hillside mansion.
instead, when we look back, there is actually a sense of LOSS. loss of what our future should have been. and that's much more painful. so when i post 80's songs, what i'd really like to do is cocoon our modern reality inside of our prelapsarian hopes.

lolol
i wonder what are some of the best books from the 80s/90s that predicted this kind of bright future. the kind of predictions that would make us howl with laughter now.
"Dow 96,000" (or whatever the title was) comes to minf. people really believed this shit.

the 80s produced a lot of great music.
i think thurston moore or someone said that the 80s are counterintuitively arguably the richest decade of all time for music. there was so much going on in so many different areas. and much of it was truly original, before the self-referencing/cannibalizing/sampling/ironic-rehashing tendencies of the 90s/2000s set in.

Wistful exuberance is perfect description
Tellingly, they perform this song in the excellent 1983 slasher film The House on Sorority Row and it's great there too

he looks like david koresh. it's interesting how the whole "cult of youth" thing overtook pop, but didn't have the same effect on other genres like country, where it was still acceptable to look a bit older/burlier/etc. except to the extent that it BECOMES pop.
i think japan represented what looked like a workable alternative model to the western/eastern bloc split of the cold war era. japan was capitalist, but it was mostly just "japanese," which provided a lot of fascination.
wang chung's first single from 1980 was called "rising in the east," which was somewhat concerned with china, but 80's china was simply too poor and backward and inaccessible for japan-style fetishism.
i also suspect that the video game/nintendo revolution had a lot to do with the japan obsession, along with dubbed anime films like nausicaa. it was a comprehensive alternative model to western culture that was nonetheless modern and translatable into western terms.
