For me,
I know I can get a four star hotel almost anywhere for $100/night on hotwire. That's $700.
You're paying a MINIMUM of $1800 a week at this place, and if you use it like most people, probably double that.

In college a buddy of mine gamed a couple of them - went to the presentation, then we made a Vegas trip out of it: just paid for the airfare and stayed in a really nice timeshare off the strip for free.
I dont think I'd ever pay for one though.

In-laws, who are blue collar, own a time share. Every now and then my wife and I use one of their weeks. The experience is SPS.
They nickel and dime the fuck out of you for services in a far worse way than the typical hotel/resort/coastal condo management company ever would. Also, they're never not trying to pressure you into buying more timeshares.
I fucking hate it.

I, of course, was lied to. I have learned to expect it. The unit I bought was supposed to be the top floor with an open atria and open air showers but now there is another floor on top of mine. It IS amazing how the timeshare industry will tell you ANYTHING if they think it will get the sale. Grand Sol Mar was especially annoying this last November 2011. They told me that the Finisterra is going to be torn down. According to the Finisterra, not true. Also told me that PBSB will never build their golf courses because Grand Sol Mar owns the property. I believe that PBSB golf courses will not be built but not because Grand Sol Mar owns them! PBSB is still telling people that the golf courses will be built "by the time you get here next year". Been saying that for 7 years now, and tried to tell me that again when I was there in November. Don't believe anything that you can't see staring you in the face. I broke my own code of never buying retail when I can buy resale because I SO LOVE the golf course and the people that currently inhabit it. I wouldn't be surprised if their amazing customer service goes to zero as the project gets fully developed. Worst case scenario, I still get to play an AMAZING golf course whenever I am in Cabo. Update: My hole in the ground, when I purchased, is now, one year later, almost complete. Albeit, without an open air atria.......

YES - under the following conditions:
a.) You buy your timeshare in the secondary market (e.g. Redweek) so you pay essentially 50% of what the initial fool did for it. There is sort of a bottom end, because most timeshares have 1st right of refusal to purchase it back first.
b.) You buy from a "Tier 1" timeshare operation, like Marriott, (but not direct, again, see point above) that give you a ton of outs in the sense that you can "trade" the annual timeshare value for weeks at different locations, reward points for free hotel stays, etc. Essentially, any easy way to monetize the timeshare on a year that you either don't use it, or don't sublet it.
c.) You buy a high value timeshare. Something like Marriott + Hawaii + annual + "red week" (meaning prime season, the example given is the HYP of timeshare value). That allows you to exchange it on marketplaces like Interval for so your 1 week in Hawaii could buy you 2 weeks at a timeshare/5-star in Bali.
d.) The annual fee is less than what you see people being able to sell their week for on EBay or Redweek.

My parents bought into a timeshare, I believe it's called "wyndam" or "worldmark."
They like it a lot. It isn't your typical 1 property, basically you buy shares or credits and you can stay at any of the locations, and they're all over the US, Canada, and Mexico. I've been to a ton of them and they're all legit nice as fuck. My parents are happy with the setup, plus I'll inherit it when they die and I'll only have to pay the minimal maintenance yearly fee.
Like the guy above me stated, it's really easy to trade shares with sister companies if you want to stay in a place that doesn't have your specific timeshare.
