There's a multivitamin called Source of Life by Nature's Plus with no iron. It's universally regarded as the best multivitamin on the market. It's whole foods based.

It's literally the highest quality multivitamin you can get. It's the same as anything else. There's the good shit, then there's the 5 dollar shit you get at walgreens. Actually walgreens has a multivitamin by Nature's Plus called Alive!. That one is good too and I have taken it before. But Source of Life is the cream of the crop.

It has the best form of every vitamin and at the perfect ratio. Cheap multivitamins use cheap forms of vitamins so they can save on money. The vitamins are mostly whole foods based. The company that makes it is regarded as one of the best.

nobody has mentioned this but absolutely the one vitamin worth taking in supplement form is vitamin D.

Almost everyone is deficient in vitamin D and deficiency causes a whole host of problems. Vitamin D makes you feel great. Cures aches and pains, seriously.

multivitamins are "bad" because so many things are fortified these days. You wind up getting too much folic acid and vitamin A and some other stuff (multivitamins are usually loaded with the same basic crap that cereals are fortified with). And the vitamin A in multivitamins is usually the type that stays in your liver. You should be getting vitamin A from beta-carotene. If you don't need it, it doesn't get converted!

Right. You should get your vitamins from food but if you need to then Source of Life is a viable option.

fear of vitamin A poisoning is pretty silly, and a huge percentage of the population either doesn't get nearly enough beta carotene to make up for the deficit (you only turn a fraction of consumed beta carotene into vitamin A), or they have no ability to convert to vitamin A at all (about a third of the population).

unless you're wolfing down organ meat and shitloads of milk and butter from grass-fed ruminants, you have no realistic chance of consuming too much dietary vitamin A, and the large majority of people in the U.S. get a sub-optimal amount in their diet.

the health nut persecution of multivitamins is pretty ridiculous. if you have even a quasi-normal diet they aren't really necessary, but they could be beneficial for many people with shitty diets. the real issue with multis, and something rarely taken into account in macro studies, is that many dumb people are prone to eating shittier overall because they think the vitamin has them covered nutritionally. so they eschew whole foods and the kind of shit they should be eating every day for many reasons beyond simple nutritional basics.

that said, what if any vitamins you should take, really depends on your diet. like the dude above said, most people are borderline or low on vitamin D. most people would also benefit from some modest zinc supplementation unless their diet is super high in beef.

if you don't eat eggs and meat, you're probably pretty low on most of the Bs and should look at a high quality vitamin supplement if you're not trying to take care of it nutritionally. people who never eat any whole eggs are also pretty likely to be choline and iodine deficient, although it's poorly understood if this seriously matters.

and there's other stuff that most people could cosmetically benefit from and usually don't have high dietary compensation for, but ultimately doesn't normally impact health. selenium is a good example. a diet rich in selenium will likely just make you look healthier, but it's far from necessary and your ability to absorb it from non-food sources is fairly limited. this is why compounds like that are in amounts exceeding 200% of daily values in vitamins.

a high quality fish oil/omega 3 pill is good for most people if you don't eat much fatty fish, but again, so much better to just eat it.

most people do not get enough of those, even if they eat pretty well. if you drink at all or drink a lot of coffee, you are especially susceptible to mineral deficiencies.

a lot of people also don't get enough vitamin A. it's better to get it from diet, but again, if you drink, taking a supplement with some form of retinol rather than beta carotene content is a good idea.
