Added more context. Unfortunately, no big capital gains or stock options, just plain lived cheaply and had a wife that also had a high income (but no longer). Net worth basically has peaked and it should be going downhill in a few more years.

so you made about $500k combined before taxes for 7 years (on average) and saved $2mm? Something doesn't really add up. After taxes, you hardly made $2mm, maybe even less.

Sure there was no wild gains in the stock market or an inheritance?

They had to have doubled it in the stock market. All cash doesn't make sense, especially given her supposed job. If they just put the money in an index fund in 2006 though, they would have some impressive gains.

We didn't do much investing outside of 401k and IRAs unfortunantely, but we did so some and maybe that did okay, but we aren't talking like 200k of dividends or capital gains. Also my wife's job being more tied to the market made us more conservative with investing especially as her bonuses got a stock component at the end.

I don't think our effective tax rate was ever over 35 (single filers, no marriage penalty for a while). That number is closer to 8 years on average and there are a few summer internships I exclued which gets us another chunk.

0 school debt; only debt is about 140k left on the house, but the house has equity, so I don't count this.

So 270k. My wife has another 100k 401k and 40k equity (total.80k equity--community property state)
