you need to start with people you can ask favors of. ask them to help you find a job and ask their friend.
then there are people who would recognize you in a crowd. go to events where these people are present and spend some time with them. don't pressure them or talk about finding job too much. just try to get familiar with these people.
then there are people who are 2 or 3 degrees away from your social circle. these are the people who tend to get you a job. you need to look out for these people and focus your actions to reaching them.
if you're not naturally good at it you'll feel humiliated by the process, but it is what it is. |

It helps you sort of identify resources and interests you didn't realize you had and just go for it very quickly and efficiently. It doesn't have stupid stuff like "network network network" (I think the dude actually makes fun of that advice) and it doesn't waste time explaining what linked in is and what facebook is. And it's not just for MBAs. The great thing is that it limits you to a couple hours a day tops.
Also, not to undercut my above comment about the networking, but seriously get out of the house as much as you can. Come up with a sort of elevator speech about what you're looking for and what you're open to without sounding desperate, and make sure people you know are aware that you're looking for a job. Make sure you don't sound picky - you can start getting picky after you get offers, and it's annoying as fuck when an unemployed dude starts getting all whiny and picky about shit he's not even qualified for anyway. I think the biggest problem dudes in particular have is that they're too embarrassed to tell people they're looking for work. |
