Prospective client accepted my invitation to give a lunch presentation to him and his staff counsel on some securities topics. He hinted that he was unhappy with his current counsel - but I'm not sure which firm that is. We are going to talk after the presentation about opportunities to develop a relationship.

Here's the twist - I'm a senior assoc at a non vault, non AMLAW 100 firm. My rates avg about 175$/hr for all of our clients (who are primarily local). What kind of rate structure should I quote this guy if the presentation goes well and he wants to know how expensive we are vs. the competition. I don't want to quote too low of a hourly rate

There are plenty of moderately sized, well-respected firms in mid-tier cities where that rate is not beyond the the realm of possibility, though it would definitely be towards the lower end.

OP, you should obviously try to avoid talking numbers at this point, but if it is unavoidable, you should seriously consider quoting him $250 for you and $350 for junior partners.

i dunno but 175 for a senior associate is very cheap. senior associates at biglaw firms get billed out at ~700 an hour

You're at an AmLaw 100 and there aren't guidelines for this sort of thing?

Those are flyover biglaw rates, so you might want to ease back a little.

Glad to have been of assistance. We can talk in further detail but your discussion at this first meeting shouldn't even touch on things like rate structure, even if it "goes well" -- this is going to be about relationship building. It's a major coup for a senior associate to have a face-to-face meeting with a F100 GC but I'm not surprised given that you followed the steps we set out:

Hot damn that's cheap, especially for securities work. Try $450. You can say that's what the big firms charge for their most junior associates who know nothing about such a complex and ever changing area of the law.
