My guess would be that inertia and a lack of an individual incentive on any one owner's part to lobby to lower the salary (it's only about a Mil apiece, and it's not like they could realistically lower it to $100K or whatever), combined with Goodell's high incentives to protect the salary he has, combined with his power and the risk of retaliation against any ONE (or 2 or 3) owners who raised a fuss, combined with general satisfaction with Goodell's performance and a general desire and "belief in" him having some skin in the game (industrialists have more faith in performance incentives than empirical evidence warrants, probably b/c they got to the top by following such incentives), creates a situation where the owners have more to gain by sabotaging any nascent collusion against Goodell (siding with Goodell and attacking the collusion-fomenting owners) than supporting it. |
