it's boomer vanity, bro. I'm a greedy capitalist, but i'd honestly be worried about making that much as the ceo of the nfl just cause of the negative attention it would bring to me and the league. just a big fat fuck you to every fan in america. the boomers are greedy to no end though, and you have to be a special kind of oblivious nut to be a ceo.

Sigh, its annoying when people are so adamant yet so stupid.

A single national ratings point represents one percent of the total number, or 1,142,000 households for the 2012–13 season.[2] Nielsen re-estimates the number of TV-equipped households each August for the upcoming television season.

You fukn idiot

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Basketball_Association_Nielsen_ratings#Post-Jordan_decline

The retirement of Michael Jordan set in motion the decline in NBA ratings which continues today. Ratings for the 1999 NBA Finals (which in fairness, came after a lockout shortened season) were down significantly from the previous year, from an 18.7 to an 11.3. Primetime regular season games, which had become fairly routine (and highly rated) during the Jordan years, set record lows for NBC once Jordan retired. With the rise of the Los Angeles Lakers in the early part of the 2000s (decade), ratings improved, but never to the level of the 1980s or 1990s. The highest NBA Finals ratings on NBC after Jordan left was the 2001 Finals, which featured the dominant and then-defending champion Lakers with Shaq and Kobe Bryant versus the polarizing Allen Iverson and the underdog Philadelphia 76ers. The ratings for that series were a 12.1, still down 35 percent from 1998. NBC's last Finals, in 2002, came after a resurgence in playoff ratings (including a 14.2 rating for Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals). However, the Finals itself registered the lowest ratings the event had seen since 1981, topping out at a 10.2 average.

For the last time, those numbers represent a different number of people each year. A 10.1 in 1999 is vastly different than a 10.1 in 2014.

It's not about "innovation." It's about business management decisions. How the league has survived beyond concussion litigation, 2011 lockout, 2012 ref lockout, its players experiencing unprecedented criminal records over the last decade, etc. is astonishing from a managerial perspective.

Okay

1. Goodell fucking botched the ref lockout. There is no doubt about that.

2. Criminal conduct has gotten worse since he stepped into the league - see Hernandez, Darren Sharper, etc.

3. He's done nothing about drugs which are running rampant.

4. Concussion litigation? Yeah, I'm sure Goodell is up all night searching Westlaw with his econ degree from Washington and Jefferson.

He's a middling mind who got lucky.

Oh I think the rules were intended consequences, I just don't know why people are insisting Goodell had a lot to do with it.

For instance, what does Goodell have to do with the fantasy football industry that is behind about 50% of the growth in viewership in the NFL. Matthew Berry has more to do with NFL growth than Goodell.

They can subjectively decide to pay him whatever they want. But the arguments above are objective, that his ability to make "business management decisions" are superior to someone available at the $250k salary. That is a joke. There are plenty of reasons qualified people would want to be commissioner that have nothing to do with salary.

I have no idea. The previous commissioner was a biglaw partner. Goodell was head of NFL Ventures "which oversees the league's business units, including media properties, marketing and sales, stadium development and strategic planning." For a multibillion business, thats a huge responsiblity. He could command many millions a year I think.

Alright, so we're down to a couple million bucks then. That's how much he could be earning if he weren't commissioner. That is his value in the marketplace. Now tell me why you think these owners are paying him $43 million a year. Do you think his work as commissioner is worth 22x as much? Explain. How is he 22x as good as another biglaw partner, or another executive with the NFL. Explain.

We are not down to a few million bucks. He ran a $10 billion business. CDW ceo makes about 3.4 million not including stock options. Stock options can be a lot for CEOs. Goodell doesnt get any stock, so gets straight up cash. If I had to bet, I'd get Goodell could make $10mill+/yr outside the NFl.

That the owners pay him that amount is evidence (although certainly not conclusive evidence, like some of the retards ITT appear to believe) that he's worth it.

My guess would be that inertia and a lack of an individual incentive on any one owner's part to lobby to lower the salary (it's only about a Mil apiece, and it's not like they could realistically lower it to $100K or whatever), combined with Goodell's high incentives to protect the salary he has, combined with his power and the risk of retaliation against any ONE (or 2 or 3) owners who raised a fuss, combined with general satisfaction with Goodell's performance and a general desire and "belief in" him having some skin in the game (industrialists have more faith in performance incentives than empirical evidence warrants, probably b/c they got to the top by following such incentives), creates a situation where the owners have more to gain by sabotaging any nascent collusion against Goodell (siding with Goodell and attacking the collusion-fomenting owners) than supporting it.

Because it's what the market - well this market, with one store, by legislative fiat - dictates bro.
