While law school is a scam in general, at least you have better options if you graduated from Harvard or Yale. EVEN if you don't want to practice law.

At least with a Harvard or Yale degree, you can go into finance or management consulting. And they pay the big bucks.

Heck, you're better with ANY degree from Harvard or Yale, even a degree in basket weaving from those schools than any degree from a lesser known school.

Michigan is probably its own tier below the T12 ahead of GULC. They've been alone in 13th in this ranking for each of the past 4 years (assuming Boalt beats them again this year).

Chicago market must have bounced back. UIUC used to always be around the top 20-25 in the NLJ biglaw placement rankings up until 2009 or so. Then when Chicago got decimated even worse than elsewhere, UIUC was way down for a few years.

They're 22nd for '14/'15.

Class sizes are shrinking which is more good news for them. I wonder if they'll follow in NU's lead and place an emphasis on WE.

I don't know that it matters. Schools at this level are incredibly regional, and to some extent, I think firms are going to hire from them the same way they always have. BC and Fordham always seem to fare poorly in the US News rankings, but are consistently in the top 18-22 schools for biglaw.

True. I also think UIUC/Fordham/GWU/BU/BC allow for people with good connections to return home, as long as there's a legal market. A decent chunk of these kids are going to NY/DC/CA.

This is in contrast to other t1 schools like WF, Colorado, Utah which are restrictively regional.

My .02

Yeah, UIUC seems like it probably has more of an OOS presence than Minn, Iowa, Wisconsin. I would guess that ND is probably the most national school among its peers, in part due to football/name recognition, and also being a private school without a dominant home market.

Wisconsin is easily the worst of the T50 Big 10 schools by this stat. Over the last 4 years (Class of 2013 through 2010), their 101+Fed Clerkship numbers are 11.9, 11.0, 11.4, and 14.0 for an avg of 12%. UIUC has averaged 24%, and Minn, tOSU, Indiana, Iowa have all averaged 16-18%.

I would be interested to see the public interest numbers. Wisconsin's student body is especially "crunchy" and maybe that takes people away from 100+ firms and fed clerkships.

TBF, 33% in Firms of 101+ or Fed Clerkship puts them around 22nd in the country. Unfortunately, they placed the same number of raw students in those positions while their graduating class increased from high 50s to low 80s. Entering classes are up to like 120ish now, so if they keep placing only the top 25-30 students in these jobs, they'll be down around 20% once they start graduating full sized classes. This would put them in the top 30-40 schools.

"First, a confession: I graduated from Boalt in May 2010, and I am unemployed. I got good grades. I have a solid resume. I was Editor-in-Chief of a Journal. I was on the AAJ Trial Team. I externed in federal court, interned in several public offices, and spent a summer at a big firm. I passed the California bar. I have applied to hundreds of jobs and worked dozens of personal connections, all without success."

Reading the blog, he sounds like an opinionated, non-trad neckbeard--likely a former programmer/engineer. For all we know this dude has a ponytail he refuses to cut. Would not place much stock in an isolated, anecdotal report.

"A while back, I read this article in the New York Times. It explains how so many law schools can continue to report 99% employment rates, even after an apocalyptic downturn in the legal market. Basically, they count anything: part time work, contract work, non-legal work, movie theater work, prostitution, EVEN PATENT LAW."

Those numbers are off a few percent because they are multiplying big firm raw numbers by (1 - % of total students in school funded positions). But the ABA breakdowns actually show whether the school-funded positions are biglaw, and they pretty much never are. So the downward adjustment to 101+ numbers is unneccessary.

edit: looked again, and the school-funded breakdown doesn't list job type, only duration and JD required or not. But it would be pretty much impossible to have a school-funded biglaw job, so my point still stands.

It's MUCH easier to get an elite job from a T14 law school. You don't really have to put forth much effort, all you basically have to do is show up and not be a total socially awkward dork. Than you can get any elite job you desire. You can basically goof off doing your law school years and treat it like a vacation from the real world. That's the beauty of going to an elite law school.

It's the law students in the non-T14 law schools that have to work hard and prove themselves.

LOL at the comments!

Of course toilet law schools have to actually TEACH you to litigate! That's b/c toilet law school students have NO CHOICE but to open their own practice, so they better be on their feet and learn how to actually be trial lawyers b/c no respectable law firm will hire them!

The T14 law schools are basically a paradise. You get fancy BigLaw associate jobs making $160,000 doing document review and pushing paper.
