I have a friend who went to a legit TTTT and he's been in ID for 2 years. I asked him how it's going and he says he's been "looking to go in-house" and "hopes to make the jump soon". How can you be an attorney and be so clueless about your own job market.

He probably meant in house at geico to defend car crashes which is a very realistic goal

I've always wanted to join an insurer's captive firm.

One day, man. One day.

ID people can go in-house at insurance companies, where I assume they do a mix of the same thing they have been doing + managing outside ID counsel. But probably better hours. I've seen a fair number of these openings so it might be more common than you think.

I've also seen small ID firms that have insurance company email addresses. So an attorney's email address at the firm is joe_shitlaw@geico.com. Wonder what that's about. I guess the firm only does work for one insurer.

I've seen small firms that only do work for a single insurer. The lawyers had Zurich and Liberty Mutual e-mail addresses, even though they actually work for the firm.

Trust me he doesn't mean at an insurance company. This guy is clueless. And the only jobs insurance companies hire attorneys for at his level are to use in lieu of hiring outside counsel. So you basically do the exact same job for even less money.

I have a very good friend like this. I've taken to not discussing work at all. I got out of law and went into another field with through the roof QOL, but he literally can't understand why I left. He does ID. Has been at his current place less than 2 years and is one of the seniors at this point. Literally an ID mill and he comes from one of the historic TTTTs.

in his defense, there are "high end" ID fields, such as insurance coverage, E&O (defending financial claims), and civil rights (fair housing act, etc) -- enough experience in those fields could make someone competitive for an inhouse gig

I work in a niche field and deal with TTTs who copped in-house gigs at major national/multinational corps a lot more often than I would have anticipated. Every single one of them has been mouth-breathing-level retarded.

The biglaw partners/ex-biglaw inhouse folks I deal with can at least string together a coherent argument.

Nobody dast blame this man. You don’t understand: Willy was a lawyer. And for a lawyer, there’s no rock bottom to the life. He don’t put a bolt to a nut, he don’t tell you the truth or give you medicine. He’s a man way out their in the blue riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And when they start not smiling back- that’s an earthquake. And then you get yourself a couple spots on your hat and your finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A lawyer is got to dream boy, it comes with the territory.
