Player Preferences (based on a Sports Illustrated survey in April that asked 50 pros: “Which major would you most like to win?”):

1. Masters 50%

2. British Open 25%

3. U.S. Open 23%

4. PGA Championship 2%

http://www.forbes.com/sites/monteburke/2012/06/12/which-golf-major-is-the-most-prestigious/

I think europeans hold the british open in highest esteem, and the us open is the best test of golf, so overall i think masters, british and US are fairly equal.

For both tennis and golf, there is a clear loser: the Australian Open and the PGA Championship, respectively.

With respect to tennis' other 3 majors, I think it depends on the player, but I've always viewed the other 3 as roughly equal, though I do think Wimbledon was previously the most prestigious when tennis was largely a grass game. I also think the US Open has taken a bit of hit in prestige lately because it's so incompetently managed.

I also view the other 3 majors in golf as roughly equal, though I will say that the benefits for winning the Master and British Open (lifetime qualification and qualification until age 60, respectively) are WAYYYY better than the benefits for winning a US Open.

agree with most of this, except that every tennis player grows up dreaming of winning wimbledon, even the clay court spics.

tbf, RG is more incompetently managed than the US open. no lights AND no roof is worse than just no roof.

eh, i think that's just conjecture. fwiw, when i was a kid playing tennis i wanted to win RG. I'm sure there is at least a decent percentage of people who would want there only major win to be RG or USO, though if i had to guess i'd say that wimbledon would probably have the highest percentage.

both RG and W should really have night matches.

yes agreed, but night matches are great.

also, do the tournaments have the same rule that the NFL has where the lights have to be on for the whole match or none of the match?

i know nadal loves wimbledon, but i also think there are plenty of kids who grow up and dream of winning RG or USO. i can't imagine any kid (save for a couple people from Australia) who actually dream of winning the AO.

definitely never heard of such a rule in tennis. so if some guys start at 5pm and play a long 5-setter, you'd have to have the lights on the whole time? from what i remember about the US Open, they just go on whenever.

that's what they do in the nfl. their thought is that it could be more beneficial to one team if they turn on the lights part way through the game (e.g., team A gets 3 drives under the lights while team B gets 2). that's why every 4pm nfl game has the lights on.

also, when i really started getting into tennis was right when the US was doing well at RG. chang won in 89, Agassi got to the finals in 90 and 91 (should have won both imo), Courier won 91 and 92, and got to the finals in 93.

plus i was a baseliner, so i loved the play on the clay.

the british open is finishes at some ungodly hour on a sunday morning. makes perfect sense. how many people watch the wimbledon finals versus the us open finals in prime time?

i suppose more people are away and shit during the us open and pga than in april for the masters.

true, but i think for an American, you know deep down you'd rather win the Masters or the U.S. Open than the British Open for prestige. The American public ignores the British Open. I'd personally pick the Masters because of the seemingly exclusivity of the club (in both the sense of the roster of champions and the literal exclusivity of the augusta national club) that sort of mirrors the private club golfing "ideal" (rather than an open tournament where the ugly American crowds will heckle you).

Can't say the same about Wimbledon--that I would clearly pick above all others.

Wimbledon is basically a parallel to the Masters. It's a private club, and all past champions get honorary lifetime membership there. It also has such great traditions. The british (and europe in general) do traditions so much better than the US.

I do think it's not insignificant that you get to play at the british open until age 60 if you win it. that perk alone blows the us open out of the water.

the list of champions is exclusive because its the easiest major to repeat. two, even three masters is nothing compared to winning two us opens

it's not like there aren't plenty of repeat winners at the us open. 5 guys have won multiple us opens since 1991, and mickelson easily could have won multiple as well.

he won 2 and had a 3 shot lead going into the final round. could have easily had a third.

That has been a trend, but those dudes deserve it. beating 155 players on different courses>>>beating 95 (which includes 65 years olds and shit like the mid am champ)

i'm just saying, facts show that it isn't necessarily harder to win multiple us opens than it is to win multiple masters.

For Golf it's US Open >> British >>> Masters >>>>>>> PGA

US Open is the undisputed POTUS of golf. Masters is becoming more and more apparent that it's kind of a gimmicky setup that really plays into certain player's strengths.

US Open is the Univeristy of Chicago of Golf. It might be the most rigorous, but it is not the most prestigious.

Masters Bump.

My personal rankings as to what I'd want to win would be:

Golf -- Masters, British, US Open, PGA

Tennis -- RG, Wimbledon, US Open, Aus Open

-------------------------------------

In the greater populace I'd expect it to be:

Golf -- Masters > British = US Open > PGA

Tennis -- Wimbledon > RG > US Open > Aus Open
