How long do you put off thinking yourself worthy of the best things, and never going against the definitive capacity of reason? You have received the philosophical propositions that you ought to agree to and you have agreed to them. Then what sort of teacher are you still waiting for, that you put off improving yourself until he comes? You are not a boy any more, but already a full-grown man. If you now neglect things and are lazy and are always making delay after delay and set one day after another as the day for paying attention to yourself, then without realizing it you will make no progress but will end up a non-philosopher all through life and death. So decide now that you are worthy of living as a full-grown man who is making progress, and make everything that seems best be a law that you cannot go against. And if you meet with any hardship or anything pleasant or reputable or disreputable, then remember that the contest is NOW and the Olympic games are NOW and you cannot put things off any more and that your progress is made or destroyed by a single day and a single action. Socrates became fully perfect in this way, by not paying attention to anything but his reason in everything that he met with. You, even if you are not yet Socrates, ought to live as someone wanting to be Socrates.

I probably couldn't score 170 untimed. Thanks for the compliment, though. I merely saw the form of his argument as an interesting attempt to put the other guy, who had originally made a bold claim, suddenly on the defensive. I knew something did not follow, but I didn't know what, and so, I paid his rebuttal a closer examination. It turned out that he had not properly distributed his middle term and was arguing from two particular premises, albeit interestingly disguised. Normally I would not have gone out of my way or taken the time to call someone out like this, because doing so resembles a kind of taunting in my book. But his disguise was so intriguing, I couldn't resist subjecting my little observation to the fires of scrutiny.

In Plato's representation of Socrates, it can be discerned that the latter seems to have had a very remarkable (and equally antagonistic) way of actually shutting conversation down while disguising his activity as a conversation.
Such a demonstration technique may be useful to one wishing to confound laypeople or impress other specialists of his own kind.
I doubt, however, it would serve a useful, long term strategy for the majority of people wishing simply to get along effectively with their fellows day in and day out; if pursued in another time or place where talking mainly for the sake of doing so better than everyone else were less prized than in Socrates' Athens.
Railing ad nauseum at incumbents, like Socrates seems to have been doing, too, can put anyone's well being at risk, whether or not he is a soldier, like both Socrates and Timothy McVeigh were, or not.

i prefer this:
"One hundred years is the limit of a long life. Not one in a thousand ever attains it. Suppose there is one such person. Infancy and feeble old age take almost half of his time. Rest during sleep at night and what is wasted during the waking hours in the daytime take almost half of that. Pain and sickness, sorrow and suffering, death (of relatives) and worry and fear take almost half of the rest.
In the ten and some years that is left, I reckon, there is not one moment in which we can be happy, at ease without worry. This being the case, what is life for? What pleasure is there? For beauty and abundance, that is all. For music and sex, that is all. But the desire for beauty and abundance cannot always be satisfied, and music and sex cannot always be enjoyed. Besides, we are prohibited by punishment and exhorted by rewards, pushed by fame and checked by law. We busily strive for the empty praise which is only temporary, and seek extra glory that would come after death.
Being alone ourselves, we pay great care to what our ears hear and what our eyes see, and are much concerned with what is right or wrong for our bodies and minds. Thus we lose the great happiness of the present and cannot give ourselves free rein for a single moment. What is the difference between that and many chains and double prisons?"
