I told her to dress like a complete slut, so she was wearing a tight dress that barely covered her ass and she looked like a total prostitute. She was incredibly rude to the staff and didn't know what anything on the menu was. She didn't eat pretty much at all and when we got home ordered fucking mozz sticks (lol). I got fantastically drunk at dinner and lol'd to myself about it. Had dinner there with my parents a week or two later and it was the same waiter, thankfully he was discreet. (Eleven Madison Park is the polar opposite, and has retarded gimmicks galore.) The service is impeccable, and not in a douchey way where waiters are falling all over you. It is not the "best" restaurant in New York in any one category, but it is always excellent in terms of food/service/overall experience, which I think is its selling point. It is where I would bring someone for an important dinner to close a deal or to thank someone for a serious business referral. It is not where I would take someone for an anniversary or anything remotely romantic, and I would not take tourists there for a unique food experience.
BTW last time I was there for dinner, I saw exactly what you described in terms of DSLR-snapping Asians. I was a bit surprised that the staff didn't politely ask them to stop, but we were having a good time and I got over it quickly. WTF is wrong with people who do this? Why do they think this is acceptable behavior? Is this widespread in Asia or is it an Asian-American thing? |

He was bald and had a lot of sun damage to his face, and had a pretty substantial alcoholic bloat (probably gout, too). He wore one of those straw fedoras, but at least had the courtesy to take it off while he ate. His date was a trashy bottle blonde with a shitty dye job who was wearing a white silk tank top that was very low cut and some designer black jeans with stripper-style Louboutins. Her shoulders and the inside of her breasts were covered with freckles/sun spots. She had a lot of cheap jewelry on too and was loud as fuck. They only took a few photos of their food, but the woman was posting to/browsing Instagram for about 30 minutes of the 3 hour meal.
There was an Asian couple across the way from us where the guy was dressed like he was on the cover of a J Crew catalog. He was wearing highwater pants, wingtips with no socks, and had expensive-looking hipster nerd glasses on. The girl was wearing what looked like a silk romper and she had what had to be the biggest fucking phone I've ever seen. It was like as large as an Ipad and it was in what looked like a Louis Vuitton binder and had several of those weird cell phone charms hanging off of it. She used her flash for everything and took numerous photos of every dish that came out. Her date seemed not at all phased by this and continued to talk quietly with her as she snapped away. |

The food at Amelie isn't AMAZING but I think it's pretty damn good for the price point an the excellent wines make up for it. Le gigot was terrific, intimate, delicious authentic French food and pretty reasonably priced. Babbo is really great, but can understand if you thought some of the dishes missed the mark.
