Hundreds of lawyers billing 2300, 2400, 2500 hours ....
It nearly killed me the year I billed 2000. Now that is a floor, what once was seen as mental illness is now a floor.
LOL
Try 3000 boomer scum.

Nobody is billing 2500. Nobody is billing 2300 except in an outlier year or two and if you are you aint going to still be practicing in 5 years -- that's for sure. If you are over 2000 you are good. Plenty of firms if you are over 1800-1850 you are golden.

The finance guy said we were trailing our peers but not by much.
But yeah, it sounds like you're the problem with big law. When you hear that a firm's associates are averaging around 50 hours a week in the office, you scoff and dismiss it as a shitty firm.
What the fuck is wrong with you? Go live your life.

Rudolph never not being (Rudolph)
my v10 firm gives us average associate hours every year, and it is fucking low as shit (well south of 1800, so south that the managing partner admonished us all a few years ago that we need to consider 1600 hours a year as the MINIMUM), and so low that it can't just be maternity leave and turnover. That's not saying everyone is billing south of 1600 hours, but enough are to drive all the 2200-3000 hour associates averages way down. Much of that is slow practice groups over the past few years (I'm looking at you real estate), but also much of it is people doing just enough to not get fired, and at 2000 hours a year (at my firm in my group at least) you are comfortably in the not-being fired range (note, 2000 hours still means you need to be available at night/weekends when shit comes up). In fact, whenever I start billing 70-80 hour weeks, I have partners telling me to tone it down so I don't burn out on them.

This guy is a bit of a douche. "They look at what the starting salary is rather than the mentoring programs or the work"
The work is shit and mentoring programs don't matter. I've seen movies from the 80's - surprise! People cared about money then too.
If firms started offering federal judge perks - great hours, tenure, and pensions, maybe we'd care about more than getting cash for our labor.

This, except don't forget to add the client-driven deadline in the middle of those two things. Goes like this:
Court thinks: One week is plenty of time to write up a response to my sua sponte idea for why judgment should not be entered for the plaintiff! After all, this is a Biglaw firm for a F500 client and I'm only giving them 5 pages anyway.
Client thinks: Crap! The judge is thinking about ruling against us!!! That would be a total disaster not just for this case, but all the copycat cases sure to follow. I need to make sure Biglaw firm doesn't fuck this up. *Tells Top-level Parter partner to get him a draft of the response in 48 hours*
Top-level Partner thinks: Holy shit, this is one of our firm's most important client and if we fuck this up, we risk ruining our relationship with them. I better make sure Junior Partner has this covered. *Tells Junior Partner to get him a draft in the next 24 hours (i.e., high noon the following day)*
Junior Partner thinks: Fuck. I don't even know what the judge was talking about at the hearing, and I've got three other briefs going out today. Will have to look at this first thing tomorrow morning. *Tells Senior Associate to have him a draft first thing tomorrow morning.*
Senior Associate thinks: If I do good job on this, I can make PARTNER here! I can do this! Everyone will think I'm a GENIUS!!! Now, how much of this can I dump on the junior associates? *Tells Junior Associates to get him their respective assignments in 3 hours -- but asks so many follow-up questions that they all end up pulling all nighters.*
Junior Associates think: Fuck.
