Work in a small firm in a mid-size market--mostly general civil practice stuff except no family law. Graduated from the local flagship last year--respected but still just the local state school. I make in the 50-55k range & have benefits. My boss berates me and I regularly work about 55-60 hours/week and have no vacation days. There is no partnership track. Most of the past associates have lasted 2-3 years tops. I realize I am at a dead end but really can't do anything about it other than continuing to gain experience, pay down my debt and look for other gigs (and of course, there are none).

I would like a gov't gig but they are competitive and mostly seem like pure luck/who you know. I also don't think my private civil practice really has much appeal to gov't employers. So what do I do? Look for a new career altogether? Is going solo the only realistic exit option? Thanks.

Be your own boss, my friend. Have you considered knife sales?

But seriously, hang a shingle once you get comfortable in a few practice areas.

I really do not think I am going back to school. Even at little to no debt, outside of an elite school, I've (anecdotally) seen that an MBA or LLM is pretty worthless. Maybe I'm wrong but it does not seem worth it.

everyone I know who got an LLM (all in tax) got at least respectable midlaw type jobs that were paid comparable to local bigregionallaw firms. Most I know went to NYU or U Florida for LLM.

Top Tax LLMs feed almost exclusively into Big4 jobs now. Not saying that's a terrible outcome, but there are very few tax openings in firms.

Not trying to be a whiner and I don't take getting cussed out personally but I regularly fear for my job. While most associates lasted 2-3 years, the previous one was fired promptly upon their 1 year anniversary.

Thanks. I don't mean to come off whining as this is somewhat of a "good outcome" for a state law school grad quite honestly. It's still amusing to see my school's law review post the 3L's area of interest and they are invariably "corporate litigation" when the guy has a 1% chance of practicing that and not even a GOOD shot at practicing law at all.

Just kind of the sad reality of it all. Got off a tangent there--my bad.

Why work for someone else? You have the skills and know-how to run your own practice. You'll bill the same clients the same high hourly rate, but you get to keep it.

A funny schtick but the OP copies & pastes JDunderground threads & responses. That's why they don't match up.
