Don't listen to the timex-wearing geeks ITT. Mechanical watches are a lot of fun to own if you can spare the cash and aren't a penny-pinching poor.
If you are deadest on buying new, get an Omega. Your $10,000 will go farther with an Omega, though the Rolex will depreciate less quickly.
I own both, albeit used/vintage. I really like both brands, but I'm partial to Omega because Rolex has a certain prole prestige that can be annoying. Omega is less well known but still highly respected by those in the know.
you can get really nice used Rolexes for a few thousand. If it's been well-maintained, it will still keep perfect time and look great. Plus, nice vintage watches look neat. My Rolex is from the early '60s but still keeps insanely good time (2-3 min a week).

theyre both cool, but Seamaster is the classic look and a good safe bet. Like someone mentioned, i personally would avoid the designs with the overly-gaudy bezels. Also avoid the 007 edition.
EDIT: I love this seamaster design, though I personally prefer white dials and leather bracelet

most omegas are objectively more stylish and nearly all are better quality if you're buying at a comparable price level.
proles will be universally more impressed by rolex. either watch will last forever and look good. pick your priorities.

I just got home from work. The new seadweller has gone under $10k on the grey market for new. If you must buy at an authorized dealer, the Blue/Black GMT seems to be high demand and has the best resale of current new models. You might be able to score a new Daytona for 10k, but it is more like $11k. Sub is fine too. Figure 7500-8k grey new and $8500 authorized dealer new. Milgauss black dial is a nice watch and discontinued but still ~6k new grey market. Check out rolexforums.com
Another option is the tudor blackbay. The blue dial one is nice and $3500. The heritage Chrono is another nice watch.
The only omega I would ever buy new is the classic speedmaster, manual wind with the 1861 caliber. Omega has shit resale value.

Thoughts on Taghauer? There is a self winding dive watch by Tag that I really like. Goes for $3000.
Was thinking of buying it.

This is like asking BMW or Mercedes
The answer should be obvious.
Also, my vintage Submariner is still my favorite daily wear.

My casual watch is a Nomos Club Datum mechanical w/ sapphire back.
For a dressier watch, I'd recommend Omega simply since it's my preference. Mine is their relatively new >15000 Gauss. It's dressy like all Aqua Terras but also has a lot of unique / in-house aspects to it that make it interesting. If your undergrad isn't engineering, buying a Rolex Milgauss or Omega >15000 Gauss is poseur IMO.

Omega if you genuinely appreciate watches and want to make a positive impression on people who are the same.
Rolex if you want to impress proles.
