Subject: lateral interview

2nd year associate in small firm. Managed to get interview with V100 firm for lateral position. Never been through large firm interview/hiring process, so don't know how these things normally go. I'm supposed to have lunch with hiring partner and later with another partner. That's all I know so far. Is this typical? No panel interview? Should I expect something more formal later if these two don't hate me?

Sounds like a screening interview. If you impress those guys they'll bring you in for a half day of interviews where you'll meet with five or six attorneys

this.

im surprised they're bothering to waste time having lunch with you. that's prob a good sign that they like you. usually a screening interview is in-office.

and biglaw doesn't do "panel interviews." you meet with 6-8 people over and over again and answer the same stupid questions.

Not the op, but was in similar situation and was called back for meeting with 6-8 partners recently. I know sometimes you might get an offer on the spot, but it didn't happen with me. How long would it ordinarily take a big firm to make a decision after the second stage interview?

I went through the lateral process last year and the simple answer is that there is no meaningful answer. Some firms my recruiter was able to tell me the day after whether an offer would be coming. At another firm I got an offer over two months after the last interview. Depends on their needs, who you're up against, if they give someone else an offer how long they take to make their mind up on it, how much time the group has to devote to hiring decisions etc. Total crap shoot.

Believe me, I've been there. No fun at all. The good news is that firms are slammed right now, so if this one doesn't work out, you've got a good shot of finding something similar or better elsewhere.

Back to back lunches? Pace yourself. Get something light at the first lunch. Probably a salad. When you get to the second lunch go all out, lamb chops etc.

Dude that's nothing, at least at the V5s. My S&C interview was straight out of Audrey Griswold's nightmare in European Vacation. I must have had 9 full meals over the course of 5 hours while the partnership just kept chanting for me to eat more.

"Breakfast?!" An 8th year associate's long dead eyes momentarily regain their sparkle. "Oh, you mean actual breakfast, with eggs and bacon...." He slips his loafers back off under the desk and thinks about the new episode of GoT waiting for him on HBO Go.

it's a high-risk, high-reward strategy. if he order steak fajitas, when they come out, he'll have the perfect opportunity to knock a softball out of the park and sell the sizzle. if he can pull that off, the steak will be waiting already prepared . . .

Will he use the tortilla correctly? Does he put the fajita into the tortilla and make a lil burrito? Or, does he tear off pieces of the tortilla and pinch pieces of the fajita to eat?
