There is no way to distinguish middle 60% of lawyers. You can tell the SPS ones and the fantastically creative ones, but that's about it.

Even when someone says David Boies is a fantastic litigator - wtf does that mean at this point? That he has a fantastic service partner?

he's VERY good at getting last second motions filed. he knows exactly where to stamp the documents to get in good graces of the clerk.

Your an idiot. You claim that there's no way to distinguish the middle 60% and give the example of David Boies.

The reason that Lawyer's care about credentials is because that's what lawyers do. They take concepts and concretize them until they are meaningless. If HLS+cravath meant you were taught to be a good lawyer it would not be credentialism it would be quality. So the natural outcome is to move the meannig of HLS and Cravath further and further away from what it was originally sought after to represent.

The use of "even" indicates that i fucking know that david boies does not fit into the 60%.

pretty much but also lawyers are kind of aspie and need rigid structures so they adopt the hierarchy of the USNWR like it's a court document or legal code

basically law isn't all that hard so it's difficult for the market to distinguish the best from the worst and since there is an over-supply it's even more important not to be shit

of course this is insane because it ultimately leads people to take 300K in loans when they probably could be a great lawyer with 1/3 of that

who benefits? the bar, older lawyers, boomers

there is no substance to the legal profession. Theres no way to distinguish 99% of them. Only trial lawyers can be distinguished if theyre very good looking. The credential bs is only rampant in professions where there is nothing else to go off of.

There is no way to differentiate, and that's why responsiveness (always checking Blackberry) and spending time at your desk (billables) are the logical ways that lawyers end up competing with each other. It's miserable.
