most backgrounds just search public records in your counties of record and pull your credit. from there, they can start doing interviews on references (and get those references to provide other references) and past employers - although most large employers have policies prohibiting disclosing anything other than verifying dates of employment. if it is government, particularly fed, they can likely get access to proprietary databases for criminal. anything beyond that is a poly
costs depend on the level you go, corporate rate, etc.
the automated shit online sucks because it wont filter out false hits or make connections based on other parts of your app or leads references give as to counties you've spent time in and are worth searching for dirt.
