I came in class of 2011 set to join tax group of v30. Was told I had to do litigation because no one in tax was billing more than 1000 hours (I had split my summer). Did it for three years, hated it. Tried to do tax controversy lit as much firm had it available, but lit just wasn't for me.

Finally got fed up with it, started spamming firms about starting over as a 1st year tax associated (I'm fine w/ the demotion; just want to be doing work I enjoy again). Starting at a v50 next month.

Feeling pretty empowered, bc I felt like I was stuck on a shit career path. Can get better bros.

I'm a lit to tech transactional bro. Unfortunately law still sucks, but in a more normal suck like jobs suck, not in a daily jump off bridge suck like I felt in lit

I think the greatest thing about this is the sense of satisfaction i feel at finally taking a hold of this shit situation and making a change. i feel fucking ridiculous for having continued with it for three years, but the satisfaction now is off the charts.

I went in-house. Lit is better in-house. Its an entirely different job, really. I will NEVER go back to a firm.

In house options are shit for litigators, pay much much less than what the tax/ transactional people get.

In shitlaw, you only have litigation so I can't compare transactional.

Why is biglaw lit so much worse than biglaw transactional?

Tyty. It's very cerebral and requires a lot of thought. I like the issues, have spent a lot of time with it and am interested in it (dad is an accountant, worked in his office growing up). I like working with the law (rather than facts), and enjoy the puzzle of trying to figure out how the code/regs work.

Also left litigation after a few years at a big firm. Every once in a while, somebody still asks me if I "miss litigation?" Lol
