I once read a few parts at random and found it unbearably tedious, and I'm even someone who thinks many parts of the Bible are interesting.

Beyond that, reading any reasonably impartial history of the founding period of Islam is enough to turn anyone's stomach.

But Anyone with a good ear can tell you that listening to verses of the Quran in Arabic is pretty chill and beautiful - that's a good start

It isn't worth reading in English. I've read a few dozen pages. A lot of it is semi-nonsensical rambling about how "Allah" is going to punish enemies of Muhammad. The translations aren't nearly as beautiful as the Pauline letters, and this is coming from an atheist with a background in religious studies

Yeah, it doesn't translate well to English, or many other languages for that matter, at all. That's why the study of Arabic is considered essential in Islamic cultures

It's not really a question of how well it translates, or how wonderful it sounds in Arabic. christians don't think biblical text was literally written by god, but rather it's god speaking through the authors of the text.

In contrast, the words of the Koran are literally considered to be holy. Translations are seen as problematic not because they're less aesthetically pleasing, but becuase translation = interpretation and debasement of the holy text.

I've never read it in arabic, tbf, but in english it seemed pretty SPS.

The question is whether the Quran is a good book or not. I'm discussing it's literary value. I am telling you that I have a feeling that if you knew how to read Arabic, and were open to the experience, you would be able to appreciate the Quran as a work of great literature.

Pumo above who said (Farsi speaker) is spot on in understanding where I'm coming from. I can speak from my limited experience with Persian literature because I have read and heard some poems in Farsi that are absolutely beautiful and fucking incredible in the original language that sound like pure shit when translated to English. This is not a controversial opinion brother

brother, i was not opining on its literary value in the original arabic, just pointing out why translations would be especially problematic (at least to Muslims)when dealing with the text of the Koran.

edit: i take your word for the merits of the ur text, but i gotta say that i haven't really found semitic languages to sound very pleasant when i've heard them.

Your point is valid. The original is sacred/holy - the Translations are not. I'm saying that perhaps the original is sacred precisely because translations do not capture the beauty of the original

I read some of it - the verses were incredibly vague. I'm not a scholar of the Arabic language , and Arabic is an incredible complex language. I dont have any knowledge to refute the points about the Arabic knowledge so how do you expect me to respond ? My point is that you don't have any knowledge about Arabic either yet you are confident in trusting a weird wiki article with a heavy polemical bent . I'm not interested in discussing further with you because you appear confident in your ignorance

I get especially dissappointed when I see the same level of discussion (strong opinions based on little to no knowledge or actua study of the religion In any way) on a board full of supposedly intelligent people . Makes me realize the majority of people here are much dumber and much

Much more narrow minded than they think

It's been taken over by legit Stormfront racist brehs. They are frustrated at their own life. It is not easy being a 5'4 overweight white fuck college drop out in America. They take their anger out on the "other" without any factual basis for doing so in order to justify their TTT existence.

It might be better organized but LOL @ comparing the Quran's prose favorably to that of the bible.

The bible is an intense, passionate book full of rage and fury. It is easily among the best prose ever written. The Quran just reads like a political speech. It tries to sound "inspired" but it never really works.

I'll go for him: Ecclestiastes -- there is nothing in the Quran to rival that type of prose

If you read the Koran and compare it to not just the bible but to what Jesus actually says in the bible, then the Koran is the lesser of the two. It's filled with a lot of weird shit and angry shit about the enemies of Allah and warriors of Islam getting the virgins when they die and all that.

Jesus doesn't. He's far more peaceful than Mohammed. Jesus was basically a shitlib. Mohammed was an angry fundie.

Dude, there are tons of weird verses in the bible....really bizarre sounding shit (if we judge by modern standards/culture) in the Old Testament especially. You are just more forgiving when it comes to the bible because you understand the Christian tradition better. That understandable, but you bros need to step back and accept the limited perspective and very limited knowledge you have about Islam. It will chill you out and be more open to learning

Read my post.

The difference between your koran and the bible is that bible is the compilation of documents and written materials over centuries by many different people. The New Testament, which is the basis of Christianity, is an entirely different beast than the Old Testament, and even within the New Testament, what Jesus says is paramount. Read what Jesus specifically says. There's an enormous difference in his preachings and his attitude compared to Mohammed. Jesus forgave his enemies. Mohammed didn't. Mohammed called for deaths and which is why apostasy is such a big fucking deal in Islam whereas in Christianity it's barely registered.

Mohammad was writing about his time brother. The Arab world during his time was a dark and brutal world, strife with war and conflict. Maybe Jesus would have responded differently to the conditions Mohammad was in but that is another question I need to think about more, before I respond to you

So was Jesus's time. The Romans had conquered Israel and defeated the Israelites. What was his attitude? Leave the Romans alone and give to Caesar what is Caesar. He forgave the people who condemned him to death.

Your big Mohammed's followers led an army out of Arabia and conquered much of the Mediterranean world, taking advantage of two tired, worn old empires (Byzantines and Persians) who'd been fighting each other for centuries. I don't call the Arab conquest a peaceful thing, given it involved armies and sacking cities.... Show me Jesus doing this.

Just be under the Roman heel while other Jews want you to overthrow them and instead preach servitude and humility-- what the fuck bro. Jesus's time was not exactly a high point in Jewish history.

I'm saying perhaps both responded correctly , even though the conditions were brutal for both. This discussion requires a more nuanced understanding of the specific historical conditions that both Jesus and Mohammad lived in and I don't have that knowledge on the tip of my tongue right now. I will be back when I have spoken and read with the scholars.

I understand-- just as a synopsis. Jesus died like a traitor to his own people but told Peter to put his sword down. Mohammed died a powerful ruler of a burgeoning kingdom.

Just remember this, Islam mostly spread through forcible conquest. Christianity spread through conversion.

I don't buy any of this bullshit about Islam being a peaceful religion. It's an ugly, brutal, nasty, fundamentalist religion and ISIS today is probably the closest manifestation of Mohammed's Islam since the original Arab conquest circa AD 650. What is ISIS doing that's any different than what Mohammed's followers did? Answer that question.

You might find this useful. It explains how Islam was able to explode out of Arabia, taking advantage of the seriously weakened Byzantine and Persian empires. It wasn't due to the force of Mohammed's preachings, but the swords of his followers.

It's unbelievable how comprehensive it is on anything you're struggling with or concerned about. Every time you read it, something different will be apparent to you. Any question you have about life, how to respond to situations, you'll find the answer. It is repetitive on certain matters for a reason, because there are certain morals and values that need to be emphasized so that we apply them in life if we read it more frequently. Such as respect of parents, trust of Allah, patience, gratitude, kindness, etc.

The longest surah, surah Baqarah, is 286 verses, and it was revealed over a long period of time, yet it is thematically palindromic.

Read it with tafseer (explanation/commentary). You can't just gloss over it, and get properly immersed in it and to understand how purposefully nuanced the text is.

Here's an example to give you an idea of what I mean:
