The New Yorker’s archive is full of strange stories about Richard Nixon. Take this Talk of the Town story, by Julie Hayden, which ran in June of 1979. It was a rainy day in April, and two employees of the Pacific Telephone Company, Charles Huettl and Fred Lumberg, were laying cable by the side of a road in the Southern California countryside. Suddenly, they were approached by a man with a gun who identified himself as a Secret Service agent. He needed their help, he said: Richard Nixon’s car, a four-ton Cadillac, was stuck in the mud in a nearby cow pasture. The three men left the road and walked into a muddy field. When they reached the car, Huettl told Update, Pac Bell’s employee newsletter, a man emerged. “I recognized him immediately.… It was Nixon, all right; he even had on his traditional blue suit.” Using rope and a winch, the men got the car unstuck. The former President, Hayden writes, “shook their muddy hands.” Then, before they left, Huettl and Lumberg asked Nixon why he’d been sitting in his car in the middle of a field. Nixon, Huettl says, told them that he had “wanted to see the wildflowers in bloom.”

there is a great anecdote in Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail where HST is basically chasing around "tricky dick" bad mouthing him at every turn and he's dying, the whole time, to fuck with him, call him a scumbag, etc. And he's taking a leak at some airport and lo and fucking behold Richard Nixon is next to him taking a leak. He's ready to unleash on dude and ARE PRESIDENT goes "hey, I'm a real fan of your sports stuff. what do you think about the redskins this year?" and completely disarms him and they end up agreeing to a convo in the car as long as it ONLY is about sports and HST accepts because, fuck, the guy knows his shit.

The American people wanted to know if their president was a crook, and he wasn't, at least according to him.
