STEM is flame for most people . there are a few CS types who win the lottery in terms of joining the right company, but to think that STEM is a guaranteed stable career with $$$ is a joke. engineers get layoff pwned all the time. esp in CS youth is very valuable.

youth in CS bay area fagstartup culture is valuable. in general a good programmer is always going to find work--older doods either transition to management or maintaining legacy codebases (and some obviously continue to develop new stuff)

there are more job openings for PHP for instance than node.js or whateverthefuck shiny new thing guys in skinny jeans and graphic Ts are playing with.

This is all cr. But I think OP is talking about the "every stem major makes 150k at 25 y/o and it's not that hard and even TTT stem degrees are fine" type circle jerking that is better suited for reddit.

For instance, I know some irl dudes who are reddit quality guys that 6 months ago were going on and on about how if only they'd majored in petro engineering... Of course now half the boom oil companies are firing young engineers.

But yeah, some sort of tech skill is better than another philosophy grad.

Even offering lib arts grade the chance to get a certificate in "data analytics" or something would be very beneficial. Require classes in econ, basic stats/probability, finance accounting, and make sure everyone is proficient in excel plus SAS or stata. Require a capstone project that requires data analysis.

Most motivated college students can do this and anyone who does should be able to get a job somewhere.

Pushing everyone into stem is pointless because most people aren't cut out to major in math or engineering. Pushing more people into those fields would require watering them down and diluting their value.

I don't know how many employers would though. Gpa is used to weed people out too frequently. Though a math major would have a much easier time just not butting his gpa on the resume than a Phil major would.

Maybe I'm over estimating the % that could hack it but I think many can, especially if they were adequately motivated. Certainly many would benefit from having the option. Too many U grad students are shitheads who coast in easy majors and don't know how to work hard, or they avoid all classes where there are objective right/wrong answers because they're not "math people."

Sure, except colleges aren't in the business of producing intelligent people capable of getting jobs. They're in the business of selling "education retreats" to 18 year olds. Requiring hard subjects will chase away customers and that BIG FED MONEY.

tell me where to find these data analytics jobs. i graduated from a top 20 school with econ/stats double major and couldn't get any of the econ consulting firms to look at me (no interviews even). ~3.6 GPA.

Did you spam your resume to all the smaller shops also?

I'm not saying they would walk into a sweet gig but it would be much easier to get some temp position where knowledge of excel is helpful and which they can leverage into something better.

It would be a huge boost even at the federal consulting firms.

Throw your resume on monster after making sure it's well formatted and hilights ur skills and experiences. I did this a few years ago and had calls from recruiters. Knowing pivot tables alone seemed to be their litmus test. OCR is great but u can't let urself be discouraged because cornerstone dinged you.

it's a hardline position, but i don't see a convincing case for the study of lib arts benefiting society or the individual. people just mumble some shit about it being a "public good"

STEM is flame outside of EE, ME, CS, chemE and other small niche areas that are hard to predict.

People should do practical things that are real careers.

a lot of ME jobs in the US aren't even really practical applications of ME. you are like some field supervisor or a supervisor for engineers overseas, and it's a middle management position in disguise. but still better than unemployment I guess.

most of the engineers from my ivy went into finance/consulting it seems.

i don't think STEM careers are credited for Asian guys in America, because they get typecast so much in those fields, and get treated like high tech slave labor and rarely get tapped for rapid advancement/management.

but for whites, it's probably fine. another white privilege. it's also fine for Asian chicks, who get AA like no other in the field.

Asian guys really have to do their own thing and break way from working for white institutions altogether.
