In any given market, there will be a few legitimate ones, typically down to an industry level of specificity (e.g., gurus for residency placement; gurus for legal placement). They are freaks--they've leveraged some combination of a network or teachable charisma or an uncanny intuition or superb writing skills to actually be good at what they do. If you're going into it blind, you're obviously unlikely to identify these people, unless you rely on some sort of proxy indicator like "booked for the next six months" or "able to sustain rates of $x00 per hour and has been established in the market for a decade." Maybe write out a 6 month, 1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr plan for yourself -- what you visualize, and the steps you need to take to make it all happen. Honestly, if you want to roll on your own, and if you have decent writing skills, freelance work (that may not be particularly riveting, but can be decent-paying per project - not per word) could keep your finances coming in while getting you out of the toxicity of lawl. |
