99% chance you will get stuck in Nebraska hearing social security disability claims the rest of your career. You may be able to eventually cop a transfer to a more desirable location but it isn't a given, and it could take years, To get your foot in the door on the front end, ALJ candidates usually have to say they will go anywhere for their first assignment. And, as noted SSA is the agency that employs the vast majority of ALJs.

They don't serve for life. They are as unfireable as any other bureaucrat. Bankruptcy is the only Art I judge worth being/clerking for.

They are pretty unfireable as far as federal employees go. The employing agency essentially has to file and win an MSPB lawsuit to remove them. You can probably count on one hand th number of ALJs in the past 30 years who have been successfully removed. They also don't really have "supervisors" in the traditional sense and kind of just run their own shit.

magistrate in a prestigious district can be chill and prestigious as fuck and definitely a dream job for a large % of shittigators

this was meant as a reply to the guy who said BK judges were only AI judges worth being.

federal claims also seems pretty OK

yeah, but the district court judges go out of their way to give the magistrate dudes respect and be deferential to them

magistrate in some shit district could suck. but in a lot of prestigious districts with a bunch of biglaw cases it seems like magistrates are often referred cases to handle everything up to, and often including, case-dispositive motions. and usually its extremely hard to get a district court judge to overturn what his magistrate bro did on the motion to dismiss / discovery motion / etc.

What about NLRB or ICE? They don't do much work in middle America.

NLRB judges all start out as SSA judges for a few years (probably the same in all federal agencies).

NLRB judges do a pretty fair amount of work in middle America, but you aren't limited to where you live. There is a lot of travel. There are 3 ALJ offices - DC, SF, and I think Chicago. You are "assigned" to one of those offices, but you preside over cases all over your region.

nah, you'd be fine especially if you had a working spouse. you could live in a decent suburb. wouldn't be rolling in money but you wouldn't be bad off either.

these gigs are 180. boring but really low stress. but if you aren't ex-military/jAG it's hard. probably having court exp is impt, a lot of them seem to be ex prosecutors.
